Duration: 105 minutes (30 min ROB, 75 min album)

Reminders:

!! About this Album - MAP OF THE SOUL : 7 !!

“Map of the Soul: 7” is meant to symbolize the seven members of the group, as well as the seven years the band has spent together. Map of the Soul was based on the theories of Carl Jung, who thought that the human psyche was made up of various components: primarily persona, shadow, and ego. MOTS was supposed to be a trilogy, with “shadow” and “ego” being their own EP’s, but with their 7 year anniversary it was made into a one larger album.

This album became the best-selling album of 2020 within an hour of its release; it debuted No. 1 on all real-time Korean music charts, an achievement known as a "Perfect All-Kill". Including songs from the EP MoTS: Persona, the album is a total of 21 songs, 15 being new. This album was released February 21 2020, and BTS never had the chance to perform any of these songs in front of army because of the Covid shutdown until just late last year for their concerts in LA.

Interlude: Shadow

This song is Suga’s solo song. Greed, fear, and the battle of knowing his persona, Suga talks about the pressures of rising fame and the “shadow” that comes with it. The MV version is slightly shorter than the version on the album so we will show both the MV and the album version. Shadow samples BTS’s “Intro: O!RUL8,2?”

Produced by SUGA, GHSTLOOP, EL CAPITXN

Written by SUGA, GHSTLOOP, EL CAPITXN, Pdogg, RM

Doolset: Interlude : Shadow – doolset lyrics (wordpress.com)

Black Swan

In this song BTS steps into the deep, inner side of the self and faces the shadow it has been hiding as an artist. It is the confession of BTS as an artist, who grew up to a global superstar.

“A dancer dies twice — once when they stop dancing, and this first death is the most painful.” – Martha Graham. Black Swan is created with dancer Martha Graham’s quote as a motif. Like a dancer faces their first death when they stop dancing, the track contains the fear of the moment where BTS is no longer able to perform on the stage as an artist.

There is an orchestra version of this song we will listen to in a later stream.

Produced by Pdogg

Written by Pdogg, RM, August Rigo, Vince Nantes, Clyde Kelly

Doolset: Black Swan – doolset lyrics (wordpress.com)

Filter

‘Filter’ is Jimin’s solo song where he talks about trying to appeal to someone, saying he can be anything they desire. According to him: “Filters can be the things within a camera application, or social media, but it can also mean people’s perspective or prejudice. I took these various meanings and expressed it into the song of how I want to present myself to the world in many different ways.”

Produced by Tom Wiklund

Written by Tom Wiklund, Hilda Stenmalm, “hitman” bang, Lee seu-ran, LUTRA, danke, Bobby Chung, Ahn Bok Jin, Fallin’ Dild, Fluorescence Boy

Doolset: Filter – doolset lyrics (wordpress.com)

My Time

JK’s solo song, here he talks about his feelings from the time he was just a trainee with BTS up until the present and how he feels he lost his childhood by growing up so fast and trying to find himself as he’s grown up in the light of fame.

Produced by Sleep Deez, Pdogg

Doolset: 시차 (My Time) – doolset lyrics (wordpress.com)

Louder than bombs

A haunting song that tells a story of how sadness and fear grow as a person encounters struggles in life. Especially being a group that experienced so much struggles and are now receiving more attention than ever before, they tell the pressure of being held in such a high position.

Produced by Bram Inscore

Written by Troye Sivan, Bram Inscore, Allie X, Leland, RM, SUGA, j-hope

Doolset: Louder than bombs – doolset lyrics (wordpress.com)

ON

This song can be seen as the switch from “shadow” and are now entering “ego”. ON talks about the sacrifices they have made to achieve their success, yet how they are no longer afraid to push themselves anymore and move forward no matter what.

Produced by Pdogg

Written by Pdogg, RM, August Rigo, Melanie Joy Fontana, Michel “Lindgren” Schulz, SUGA, j-hope, Antonina Armato, Krysta Youngs, Julia Ross

Doolset: ON – doolset lyrics (wordpress.com)

@jim “EGO” for Carl Jung basically means one's true self, the one we don't show others, protected by the PERSONA and having their SHADOW as their negative monstrous side.

UGH!

An exploration of the emotion anger, UGH! (A rap line song) addresses mindless and spiteful anger and how it is diminishing the value of the true emotion of anger. This song has a lot of Korean culture referenced but it still gets its message across, the true emotion of anger can change the world, but spiteful anger is making it worse. There is an explained video by DKDKTV but we will watch at a later time or on your own is week.

Produced by Supreme Boi

Written by Supreme Boi, SUGA, RM, Hiss noise, j-hope, icecream drum

00:00 Zero O’Clock

Respect

Having been the two members who lived together the longest, RM and Suga use this unit song as a conversation as they question the definition of the word “respect” and what its meaning has reduced to in modern society.

Produced by Hiss noise, SUGA, EL CAPITXN

Written by Hiss noise, SUGA, RM, EL CAPITXN

Doolset: Respect – doolset lyrics (wordpress.com)

We are Bulletproof: The eternal

A song for ARMY, BTS sing “we are not 7 with you” as they thank army for believing and supporting them for the 7 years they’ve been a band, and no matter the pain we experienced through the journey, we endured it all and are together. Also the stars and the whale in the MV represent army who been with them all along.

Doolset: We are Bulletproof : the Eternal – doolset lyrics (wordpress.com)

Outro: Ego

Jhope wraps up the album with his solo song by telling us to trust ourselves. Ego could be considered as the faculty responsible for the identity and personality of a person, and as Jhope examines himself, he is proud of his journey and can move on even further. Ego’s beginning samples BTS’s “Intro: 2 cool 4 Skool”.

Produced by Hiss noise

Hi Jim, it's my 2nd month here and I'm binge watching your BTS journey. I know I am super late in discovering this 😅 still, I super enjoyed!! I'm now at this album but I was wondering if I can see the Mots persona reaction here?

meyn

Zero O Clock is my comfort song, and sometimes I can't help crying when I listen to it. But its the good type of cry where you get your emotions out and feel better, you know? My most go to comfort songs are definitely Zero O Clock, paradise, Whalien52, So far away, Drifting, Moving On and Tomorrow.

I feel fortunate that the almightyYoutube algorithm suggested your Butter reaction to me so I got to be part ofyour journey from the start!  I getemotional every time you subconsciously use we referring to the Army!  About psychologist CarlJung’s theory for this album. I think you will find it interesting. It gives an explanation for youridea that you mentioned a while ago, that all human beings are the same attheir basis. He introduced the concept of a collective subconsciousness thatall humans share. As for the map of the soul concept Jung uses the ego, persona and shadow in a way that is apart from the everyday context. As a psychologist I found BTS inspiration to better themselves and using Jung's theory fascinating, I searched for short videos to show you an explanation. His concept's complexity can't be put in 10 minutes but this 2 vids are useful to understand it and I think BTS's message better!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=af_FvmdhZRk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnhOcTtQhow

I enjoy your reactions as always Jim!

It was NOT Adora doing the background vocals in EGO. When ppl tell you that I am confused. The documentary showed clearly the gospel singer who provided the back track.

Lily Wrenn

I loving this..

I have a confession … I’m nervous to be canceled … but I don’t have the Sia version. I feel like nothing is added, much like the Nicki Minaj, the original is better and the additional artist doesn’t add much, but the complete hate to it over other remixes like it I don’t get. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The girl in the background in ego is named Summer!

Jimin and tae have an extremely close relationship. They were both born in the year of 1995 and call each other soulmates as you know now! :') I remember when they first released the tracks i was most excited to listen to this song because i love seeing their dynamic together and wanted to hear more personal stories from them. They have such great chemistry together and understand each other on an emotional level. Jimin has always wiped away tae's tears and comforted him when he needed it most. Jimin is a really affectionate person and looks after all of the members so well. But seriously vmin is a precious bond to witness and i envy it. You'll get to see more moments between them in the upcoming bon voyage episodes and docus and understand just how much they mean to each other. Buckle up. UGH is such a banger. I am dying to see this song live. Hobi's part especially gets me so hyped up! I am such a sucker for hobi's verses in every bts song he has top tier verses, DON'T @ ME. 🤣 His flow and rhythm are so fun and bouncy. We are bulletproof the eternal, you asked why the boys were crying at the end, the animation at the end was a reference to their wings tour final concert (because of their clothes) and also the mama speech from 2018 because hobi is holding an award, standing in the middle of the boys, and crying. They were all real moments. The final wings tour concert was an emotional ride. LMAO spare your ears for the sia feature. No offense to her she sounds amazing in her own tracks but for ON? What was she even doing. 😂😂 Can't wait to see what you think of their live performances!

Cheyenne

That’s awesome! I’m glad you enjoyed our little stream :)

I’m glad you enjoyed :)

Thank you so much I enjoyed every minute!

Maria Belen Galindo

Also thanks for the great reaction Jim!! :-)

Louder than bomb is making me think about the sound of the tree whose is falling but nobody heard. Like how hard must that be for them to be put so higher and expect not to ever fall and the silence as they break. Like everybody is there now for their success, but not so much before and not so much after? I dont know, its just that kind of feeling I get? I love that song, and it must be very hard technically and emotionally to sing it live.
