!! About this Album - MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA  !!

BTS signals the beginning of a brand new story with the release of their newest EP (extended play) MAP OF THE SOUL : PERSONA. There are a total of seven tracks in this album and it debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, making BTS the first band since the Beatles to have three number-one albums in less than a year. Moreover, the album sold 3.2 million copies in one month, making it the best-selling album in South Korea, replacing the previous record-holder of 24 years.

This album has influences from various places. The album itself is based on the book Jung's Map of the Soul, about the theories Carl Jung created for psychology (more to be explained about this later). Additionally, in a press conference, RM said that ARMYs are their biggest inspiration behind the new album. He said that the group had also looked beyond themselves for influence. “We began this process by being curious about what our fans were doing,” he said “The fans’ joy and happiness is the joy and happiness that we feel as well.”

Persona

Bringing back BTS heavy hip hop influence, this song samples their song “intro: Skool Luv Affair” from 2014. In this song, RM struggles with his “persona” and in his search for finding his true self. He asks himself who he is and how he can keep up with all his personas, there is frustration but ultimately acceptance as he is not losing track of his soul.

Boy with luv (Feat. Halsey)

The Korean title for the song translates to “a poem for small things”.  When asked to talk about the song, RM said, “It’s about finding little joy in love, being curious about the little things, the details like what you’re eating, what you’re doing. But, most importantly, Boy With Luv is like a fan letter from BTS to ARMY. That’s the most important thing.”

It is quite interesting to think about the shift from their old song “Boy In Luv” (2014) to “Boy With Luv” — from a young, passionate, immature love that is represented with masculine, macho-like lyrics and visuals, to a mature, ‘true’ love that is about every small thing in life and in love that is represented with feminine, reflective lyrics that are more accepting and embracing.

Mikrokosmos

This track is named after the Greek word for "microcosm". Micros means small, and cosmos is the universe, which when combined means small universe. So, the Mikrokosmos in this song refers to something smaller than the universe but can still be called the universe - like humans that belong to the world yet are small worlds by themselves.In this song dedicated to army, BTS explore the idea of each human living in harmony with each other in his or hers own little universe, once again sharing their love for army.

Make it Right

‘Make It Right’ is a heart-warming song that honors and praises all the love and support BTS have received on their path to stardom. This song was co-written by Ed Sheehan and they later recorded a version with American artist Lauv. The first video is with BTS only and the second will be with Lauv.

A feel-good song that speaks about being at home with the things and people you love. J-Hope explained the sentiment of "HOME" during a global press conference. "The song talks about the 'home,' which is where the fans are and where our hearts are, where we want to come back to when things are hard and we feel lonely. We get strength from the people who love us and wait for us, and we come back to them so that we can return their love with even greater love."

Jamais Vu

“Jamais vu” means 'never seen’ and is considered the opposite of déjà vu. Refers to any familiar situation that is not recognized by the observer. In this song Jin, Jhope, and JK talk about our tendency to repeat the same blunders over and over again.

RM said "The song talks about how there might be unintentional mistakes and setbacks but we will keep getting up and keep on running."

Dionysus

Dionysus is the Greek god of wine and grape harvest, fertility and also the god of theater, insanity, and holy inspiration. Dionysus was considered an outcast in Olympus as he was the only Olympian with a mortal mother.

Instead of getting drunk on wine, BTS talks about getting drunk on art itself and the creative process.
