The Wired Article Part 1.5

I'll be completely honest, I'm really tired and bummed out over this whole thing. I feel like the harm Taylor has done here might be very difficult, if not impossible to undo.

It seems like the opposition was paying attention when the left cannibalized itself in the last election. I’m all for sticking it to the Dems and teaching the party a lesson after the years of moving to the right, disregarding their voters, and treating leftist policies and ideals like fringe extremism. With the biggest HOWEVER, though, because this was not that election. Some of us clearly chose the “most harm” approach, and the right was watching. They now know that there is a consequential segment of the left that is willing to take the country backwards if they can’t get their exact way forward on even one, albeit huge, issue. A segment that lacks the discernment to know when and how to use petulance or organized noncompliance to move an agenda forward and when using it will cost even more lives and liberties. The left isn’t even unified on doing whatever it takes to keep fascists out of power, so we make it incredibly easy for the right to see the pressure points and dig into them. Added bonus of minimizing the left’s reach on TikTok while the corporate news and the current administration are growing theirs. I guess my point being, so fucking what? Even if dozens of people with some level of influence on social media were being controlled like marionettes, I would still wonder why that’s an issue that needs to be addressed right now and in this way. Put it on the list, I guess, but way towards the bottom. Past the fascist takeover and getting a majority back in Congress bits.

I can’t even imagine doing it myself so thank you so much for pushing forward, Austin. I love that you talk about things that maybe won’t change anything the right thinks but you still want to try. Just hearing someone articulate what I’m thinking and feeling and showing the outrage and frustration about it is so soothing. You’re doing incredibly important work, in my eyes, and I appreciate all your effort.

2025-08-31 11:30:31 +0000 UTCI went and scrolled through some of Taylor’s tiktok responses and one of the things she keeps saying is that disclosing/not disclosing Chorus wasn’t the issue, but that it was the fact that the creators didn’t disclose that Chorus was funded by 1630. Like, do we know if those creators were even aware of 1630 funding chorus? Sure you could argue that they should have done that research, but as someone who has worked in the nonprofit sector for 9 years now - if you dig deep enough on any company, any org, any nonprofit you’re gonna find money linked to some entity you don’t like. It’s all so fuckin stupid and reeks of moral purity politics that we do not have the luxury of playing with. More importantly, this thread from Dan Nexon, a poly-sci Georgetown professor, is what I think everyone should be spreading like wildfire across all platforms. https://bsky.app/profile/dhnexon.bsky.social/post/3lxnewmsyvk26 He hits on every single point of why a unified pro-democracy coalition is the ONLY way to save the shreds of democracy. And while he doesn’t reference it at all, considering the timing I can’t help but think it is a response to the infighting over the past few days. It’s a super long thread though, so I filmed myself reading the whole thing so maybe people can just listen to it while they do the dishes or something. I’m currently editing it post to TikTok but even then it’s gonna be a long video, ugh. I have virtually no following so idk if it will get anywhere, but man, I gotta try and do something. Because this infighting will absolutely be the final death of us all if we don’t wake the fuck up.
