I actually found it interesting. The soul acts as a natural..what, restraining bolt? But without it, a person (well, vampire) may <i>desire</i> to be good, but is so incapable of understanding where moral lines are that he can't discern between his moral desires and his base desires. This comes to Spike when the demon has been chained for over a year, and the man in there with him, whose memories he has, may be struggling upward, but without the soul, it's like being stuck in quicksand and trying to swim. The soul would be a rope for him, but he doesn't have it... only the awareness that somehow, the demon's weakness has given him a tiny view of the possible moral world.
