Felony Friday - Gonzo

We’ve all seen the classic prison break movies like The Shawshank Redemption, but never do we expect an inmate to actually break free, nevermind lurk in the shadows of our own backyards. In May of 2022, what sounded like a Hollywood horror film would play out as a nightmare in real time for the people of Centerville, TX. When a violent prisoner made a run for it, the rural farming community was told to lock their doors and stay inside…but what’s the point of locking your door if the convicted murderer is already inside your house?

Wow! I haven't heard this story before so Thank You so much for covering it. Situations like this are very concerning and you're right, it's easy to play the blame game. There were so many chances to prevent this from ever happening. Obviously the ball was dropped and it sounds like security was "too comfortable" and slacking on proper protocols around these prisoners. Just thinking and expecting another routine day when they clocked in. Makes me wonder how many hours of specialized training are required and focused on worse case scenarios just like this. And did these officers even receive such training??! Are there standard emergency procedures and protocols in place or were these officers and the entire Sheriff's Department and Department of Corrections unprepared for such an emergency? I honestly feel like my very rural county isn't prepared for an event like this. I can't even begin to imagine losing 5 of my family members in such a horrific and preventable event. And then learning just how many steps and procedures weren't followed which allowed this monster to escape in the first place. How many people who slacked off their jobs, not just that day but obviously leading up to it as well for this prisoner to plan and successfully escape. However, despite ALL of the neglect in duties which enabled this monster to escape, when it comes down to it, there is truly only ONE "man" to blame and that is the monster who murdered an entire family!
