You do the maps!

Buckle up because in the first of this two part special, Tom Bell looks at great games that have maps as a board.

The fixed map and improved rules in Kingmaker are a great enhancement, even though I am biased (I'm one of the named play-testers for the new version, and am a friend of Alan Paull who worked on it.)

Whatever those games have against going to Scotland, the balance will soon be righted by Rebirth. Its beautifully illustrated, double-sided board gives players the choice of strategically placing tiles in either Ireland or Scotland. I'm also hoping that Fury Of Dracula gets a mention in part 2, as it's probably the only map board which includes Swansea!

Love to see 'real' maps in boardgames. I have the original Kingmaker, and the map was certainly part of the appeal to me back in the day. And a shout out to Pax Pamir's map: It's doesn't have the complexity of the others featured here, but its stylised regional boundaries and border design are thematically relevant. And it's printed on cloth, so what's not to like?
