NEXT VIDEO PATRON PREVIEW: Guns germs and steel critique (12 minutes)

Comments

I'm literally just responding to his own words lol, perhaps he should have actually done basic research and not lied if he didn't want someone to simply point it out. Don't go to bat for people who are so obviously wrong.

Hey BadEmpanada, I appreciate your work, and I have some critique of this piece of your video. Your argument is that its more complex than "germs, guns and steel", but are you not convinced that those three broad elements are hugely impactful? The way the spaniards arrived at the opportunity to capture a moncarch surely was helped tremendously by these things? You are not disputing that a very small force achieved the overthrow of the emporer, but the manner in which they did it. I highly appreciate your challenge of his quoting of sources, which is where you are most persuasive for me. But I think it's wrong to accuse him of being resentful of natives and reductionist about them in the same way that racists are. His point is that germs, guns and steel made the conquest possible, not that the system of monarchy made them especially fragile. You are reading into his text, that he portrays native people as such in a reductive way. As far as I can remember, his whole ambition for this book is the opposite, the book begins with him recounting a conversation he had with a man, who asked him the question, which became the question for his book. He is at the outset empathizing with that person, but you are saying, Diamond really has animosity or some resentment towards his nativeness. From what I can tell of Jared Diamond, the opposite is true. I fully understand that critiqueing his entire book, in the satisfyingly detailed way that you do, would be way too much work for a video. But your assumption, that if Diamong gets the capture of the emporer wrong in chapter 3, then its fair to assume he gets things just as wrong elsewhere, is an argument, that Im sure you wouldn't accept turned on you. If one video has some wrong information, then I should expect your archive to be riddled with mistakes?

Always nice to hear you in a new video ☺️ yeah Guns Germs and Steel made a lot of sense when I was younger but the practice of oversimplification to serve the narrative is common in the rest of the book as well. edit: ugh I can't believe I ever bought that battle story. 80,000 versus about a couple hundred meanwhile now I know full well what kind of weapons the Spaniards had and uhh well they weren't fully automatic machine guns now were they...
