Me & You, 23

Hello again. Welcome back to This. Still fighting thru my first covid encounter (getting better) and really thinking about what the hell I am doing next with my life as a cartoonist. When I was younger and starting to put my work online, it felt like I could do 1000 things and more! And I tried 1000 things, characters, stories, etc, and failed a lot. Just seeing what stuck. I was like a line on a paper going all over the place.

Gunshow, in some way, gave me more a direction to go in. A direction that COULD change, but it was more of a straight path with adjacent extra routes than a loopy line going in too many directions.

As Gunshow ended, and my other projects of the time (HiaGB, BACK, Pinocchio) came to a close, I lost that narrowing and my path got loopier. Made me regress back to when I was that child having 1000 ideas and frustrated that I couldn't do all of them at once! Which is creatively childish.

I think I need something like that again, what Gunshow provided for my creative brain, even if it means throwing away all those ideas I've had for some other story or that comic. All those things mean nothing if I can't settle down long enough to see ONE THING through. You've seen me go through this with Funny Online Animals, F-Off,  God's Hands, Cultists! and possibly others.

So I'm going to make it "me & you". I'm just going to make this comic and try to make it for myself. Cus I don't have to make a comic for some company or business. I don't have to pitch books and wonder if I'll be the next Daniel Clowes. That's egotistical thinking on my end. What's real is this weird thread I got going here and this story can be 1000 things as long as I take my time and keep the line straight.

I don't know how long I can keep that up but I also don't care to dwell on that. I just want to draw this comic without anyone telling me what to change or do differently.

I don't know why I wrote all this, my door dash just got here bye

What did you get from door dash

Kc, change UR dang pants ok shit post reply out of the way - I'm genuinely excited by how you approach your medium and it's sad to hear the frustrations. I'm hoping this scratches your itch because I think the world is poorer without your contributions (NO PRESSURE)

Ami

You own, dude. keep it weird and do it for you.

Constraints are necessary if you really want to go much of anywhere with any kind of project. I've heard it said that the best strategies are more about knowing for certain what you won't do than necessarily defining what you will do. If you'll forgive some assumptions on my part, I've been following you for about as long as you've been putting comics online. Your assessment of your process is accurate, but I feel like you are maybe feeling the more wide open times are "worse". (Assumptions, like I said.) I think those more chaotic periods generate the possibility of the focus. You don't want to do what you did, but you don't know what, so you have to mess around to reorient to the world from your new perspective. I'm stoked to watch you do this one comic for the rest of your days. I'm stoked if you change your mind in a week. You mention the egotism of perhaps aspiring to be a Daniel Clowes, but I'd argue you have already achieved a similar status. You've created multiple things that were so primal they were memes in the realistic sense, while at the same time consistently producing some of the most fun and insightful comics of our time. I'm not trying to be hyperbolic: you are genuinely an Important Artist, whatever that means.

great art can come from anywhere. a lot of gunshow happened because of a self-imposed deadline. and i’m now also self-imposing a bottleneck.

KC Green

That's great! The best art often comes from what you want to get out and into ink and paper, rather than what you need to do for a deadline.

and I’m here for it 😤

that's what I'm trying to say: This is what's next. M&Y. That's all I'm gonna do for the rest of my life.

KC Green

Well sheeeit dawg, I’m excited to see what’s next for ya
