Lacuna Rambles/Thoughts/Gif Reacts #2: ROs Fave Horror Films đ
Added 2024-10-15 12:30:03 +0000 UTC
[Alternate Text: A GIF from Scooby Doo. It starts with a close-up on someone menacingly raising an axe before it's swung down to cleave into a sub sandwich. The impact causes a spurt of red colored sauce to come from the meal. Scooby and Shaggy then enjoy their respective halves that look yummy.]
I wasn't about to do a scary (or jump-scare type of) GIF despite the topic of this post! To be clear, there will be none of that type of media on here. đ» This post is longer than a ramble, but I hope you enjoy the answers/reactions. (For these answers, I assumed an element of romance towards the end.)

Okay, so B gets you to promise not to laugh, even holding up their pinkie for you to gently complete your vow, before admitting their favorite 'scary' movie to you. It's⊠It's 'Scooby Doo on Zombie Island', which they instantly start both defending the film and depreciating their taste. The truth is: this is one of the first DVDs B got to have as their own (as in it was their personal copy) after time spent in the foster care system. It did actually freak them out as young teen since it was scarier than other cartoons at the time. (It was! You can't change ourâI mean, B's mind. đ) Beyond that, you'll learn in Book Two that they're genuinely freaked out by 'Blair Witch'. The found footage narration style and the unease it manages to foster felt too real to them! They're more likely to enjoy the fun, festive movies: 'Hocus Pocus', 'Halloweentown', and a few classics where they know what happens, not legit horror. They're likely to want to cuddle close to you after preparing snacks.
S isn't an avid horror fan, although they have more tolerance and respect for films that thread a story or have lore to them. So, a slasher wouldn't do it for them versus a story about a haunted house that is steeped in grief and misery. Okay, this isn't a movie, but they would greatly enjoy 'The Haunting of Bly Manor'. (R would too, but more so for shipping and then be like: 'oh, the story is cool too'! đ) For films, it would be 'Amityville Horror' and 'As Above So Below' because there is more to dig into about the setting/history. They're more keen to know what films you like even if your taste is scarier than theirs.
R doesn't tend to do anything by halves including when they decide to watch a scary movie. If you want to be scared or tense that night, then they'll commit to it too so long as you're together and possibly stay up that night. Titles like: 'Sinister' and 'Creep' that are good at making the audience uncomfortable and on edge come to mind along with classics like 'Scream', which R adores for the humor, and 'The Shining'. (I initially debated adding The Shining's version of 'Dies Irae' to their playlist as opposed to the classical one, but I didn't want to freak people out with those wails. đ± It has a link to R's backstory though.) They are the type to sometimes make comments about what they would do instead while still appreciating the fact there are certain 'allowances' in this genre. They get into what's going onâhow they would want to survive, etc. đȘ Given the caliber of the viewing theater in the Verner mansion, you can expect to be wrapped up in each other to endure the immersive terror. I could see a binge ending in a makeout/cuddle/ahem session for R to get out of that tense mindset. đ„°
(You'd have to calm R down after watching 'Speak No Evil' (the original, not the remake) because the amount of vitriol they'd have for the parents in that before going on a rant about: "If that was my child, I wouldâŠ" etc. If you've watched the movie, you know. Essentially, there is some non-action towards the end that would fundamentally clash with how R's protectiveness is intense/harsh. They'll get fired up.)
Oof, J's are interesting! They would volunteer to make you yummy snacks, which is saying something given their limited cooking patience, rather than sit with you through them. It's just not their first choice of film genre unless you're a die-hard fan. (You getting tense or uneasy is something J often picks up on.) đ Still, they tend to like horror that dovetails into sci-fi or has elements of another, larger plot they can appreciate while things are going to hell. Think: 'The Thing', 'The Invisible Man', and 'The Silence of the Lambs'. These are probably not the movies you would immediately think of, but will there be many thoughts in your head when J's hand is in yours beneath the blanket? Probably not, no.
Mal tends to prefer classics, having strong, negative opinions on certain movies. They'd refuse to watch the 'Final Destination' series. They'll suggest: 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde', 'Rosemary's Baby', and 'The Tomb of Ligeia'. You find that they're mainly observing you rather than what's playing out on the screen until you turn to glance their way which receives a soft kiss but nothing more. Mal tends to hold you closer just before something tragic/bad happens, seemingly knowing all of the story beats.

I didn't want to make this overly long by including plot synopses, especially in case you might want to experience some of your beloved(s) faves! There are hints in a few of these. Thank you!đ

I am giving M some side-eye about those movie picks... I feel like they're trying to tell us something. >:)

2024-10-18 17:43:44 +0000 UTCNot me reading into the others like hello. Rosemary's baby. Creepy townspeople. A child that is not of this world. Tomb of ligeia where a man is haunted by the death of his wife in his first marriage and is convinced the second is like the ex reincarnated. Sure this has nothing to do with how Mal feels about theirself as other (or fey you can tell me Mal i swear) Or how they are with MC now is because of something in their past ... and I'm sure it doesn't give extra credence to the fact they wait and wait and wait and wait. Not at all. (When I catch you Aelsa.)

2024-10-16 01:35:20 +0000 UTCmovie night movie night movie night đ apologies to anyone who sits next to sienna during a horror movie marathon, she does hug the popcorn bowl and it does go flying. (sienna would clean up the mess afterwards she promises) she spooks so easily rip. there will definitely be cuddling sessions afterwards. soldeen's not too big on horror, but i think he'd still give it a chance! depending on the type of horror, ie gore, might make him flinch and grimace a little. comedy horror might be more up his alley like beetlejuice and shaun of the dead (does that count as horror???). but he would definitely try to help soothe or be a source of comfort for anyone who's uneasy. noire's the type of movie watcher to keep ALL his comments till after the movie then he's doing a breakdown of everything he took note of. i think he likes suspenseful horror more fulfilling than slashers- psychological horror like Us or Hereditary i think would also be his vibe. he's always down for a good Monster movie tho maybe his motivations aren't for being scared necessarily when it comes to those... (listen the shape of water was PEAK) dia is keeping a straight face mostly, but she's clutching whoever's hand underneath the blanket with a death grip. you'll never catch her visibly slipping lol but her sleeping with a nightlight on that evening is purely coincidental

2024-10-16 01:00:25 +0000 UTCAnd second: I have seen at least one movie on everybody's list (Yay! Horror is my favorite genre. Itâs almost the only type of novel I read and the majority of the stuff I watch.) so here we go: B, I wouldnât consider your list to be in the horror genre at all. Maybe it would have horror themes, but I wouldnât consider it horror. That being said I LOVE âHocus Pocus" and will watch it with you all you want. May I also recommend âThe Nightmare Before Christmasâ to you as well. That is my comfort movie right there, I watch that to feel better. S, I havenât seen âThe Haunting of Bly Manorâ, mostly because I canceled my Netflix subscription. I did enjoy âAs Above so Belowâ but if the Paris catacombs are what interested S about that I have several other movies to recommend, lol. I canât stand âAmityvilleâ (I have seen it), mostly because itâs been overdone sooooooo much and that case was blown way out of what actually happened (I mean nobody took Son of Sam seriously about demons being involved, why do they take this seriously) and also anything that Ed and Lorraine Warren have stuck their nasty opinions on sets off a huge pet peeve of mine that I will not get into right now. Also demon possession movies generally arenât my jam, especially if itâs overly âchurchyâ, so despite the fact itâs a classic I have never bothered to watch âThe Exorcistâ. R, I have seen ALL your movies and am sorry but none of them have creeped me out, except one, but more on that in a minute. I loved both âSinisterâ AND âCreepâ. Though I did like âCreep 2â more than the first. I love âScreamâ, the first one, I canât finish the rest, they bore me. âScreamâ did freak me out a little the first time I saw it, but that was at a slumber party when I was in the 5th grade right when it was released on VHS (I just gave away my age), but now I remember it as fondly as âHocus Pocusâ. Also love âThe Shiningâ, but Iâd argue that the miniseries was better (because itâs closer to the book), but I do enjoy both. The one that I would have trouble with is âSpeak No Evilâ, I watched the original (the one in Dutch I think it was?) for that and had to stop halfway, it made me so uncomfortable I couldnât finish it. I doubt R would have to worry about the âif it was my child I would do thisâ thing , because really I imagine R would have packed up and left the minute shit got weird (like when that dude pressures the vegetarian lady to eat meat), the way R is Iâm fairly sure they would have noped out of there at that. Good for R. I love all Jâs movies too. All of them are classic. I adore âThe Thingâ, even the super delayed semi-recent (2011) prequel. Love them both. Also love the âInvisible Manâ, including the recent one. I would think J would have an issue with âSilence of the Lambsâ though. Figured maybe the investigative stuff might hit too close to the job? But I love that too. (I love the TV series âHannibalâ more though.) Mal, I have seen your movies too but mostly feel the need to argue: I love âFinal Destinationâ (the first two anyway), so Iâm going to pout about you not liking it! TL;DR: I seem to agree best with Râs and Jâs tastes in horror! (Yay! My favorites).

2024-10-16 00:06:44 +0000 UTCUp first we have: a couple of questions about J and their horror choices, Everlyâs opinion (sort of) on horror, some Horror recommendations from me about stuff that sort of has a Fernweh Vibe. Next (Iâll reply to myself so you can easily ignore it because itâs long), my opinion on the ROâs horror choices. So first: I wonder if J would have less of a problem with Horror if it doesnât make the MC tense or uneasy? Since that appears to be their issue with it? I am also curious, since J likes space, if maybe they would be interested in the ones set in Outer Space? There isnât a whole lot of them but stuff like âAlienâ, âEvent Horizonâ, âDead Spaceâ, âPandorumâ, and so on? IDK yet if Everly enjoys horror as I do (I havenât decided, also it seems like it might be a bit triggering given her current situation) BUT if she wanted to watch some with some similarities to her current situation (to help process?), I would recommend her: âMine Gamesâ (I think this is called something else if you live outside the USA): which gives us a group of friends, a creepy mine inside a forest, a time loop, ouroboros, and doppelgangers caused by said time loop. âThe Hallowâ: which just has creepy fae/fairies inside a creepy forest. And finally maybe âFromâ: which is a series currently running that has a little Nightmare Town (plus forest) that you canât leave with lots of the Horrorsâą in it.

2024-10-15 14:04:36 +0000 UTCMal not being a fan of final destination huh. Not a fan of you can't escape fate? Not a fan of changing the rules and it still catches up to you? Not a fan of its not matter of will it's a matter of when? Not a fan of "You may "survive" but it's never won and often more delayed"? Not a fan of the horror being some intangible force? Incheresting that. đ

2024-10-15 13:57:11 +0000 UTCIâm also⊠đBarbieâs also with B here đ She havenât seen any scary/slasher movies and she not about to start either. B and her can cozy up watching any of the Halloween movies that teen television networks do like âHalloweentownâ from Disney or âScary Godmother: Halloween Spooktacularâ from CN đ„° R movie marathon would kill Barbie, she wouldnât even be able to enjoy the post-tense session make out, all too worried about every creak she hears. But Iâm sure that R would enjoy how close Barbie clings to them đ sheâll also get back at then by making them watch a movie marathon of all the cheesy Christmas Hallmark movies during the holiday season â€ïž
