Lacuna Rambles/Thoughts/Gif Reacts #2: Lore Hints 🐇

[Alternate Text: A GIF of a cute, calico colored bunny rolling on a white blanket. The bunny seems to be sunbathing by rolling on its back so it can warm its tummy. It looks adorable!]

There are tons of lore hints sprinkled all throughout TFS, including some Easter eggs or references!

I would say there are mainly two types:

1. I will make nods or reference other media in an off-kilter or straightforward manner; it all depends on my mood. This naturally arises while I'm writing thousands upon thousands of words. If anything, it's for my own personal amusement* along with hoping some of you might enjoy the reference while reading. (*This is also why we get some outlandish or unhinged choices for the MC along with the dark humor, sweet, quippy, etc. more expected ones.) It makes things more fun! 😁

Sometimes head cannons are the way to go. For example, I have January set in her late 20s, like 28 or maybe 29. She's been gone from Fernweh for over a decade, almost 15 years! I think Sofia doesn't feel close enough anymore to use Jam, but by the end of book 1 they're close enough again. (I know you can choose "This is a B thing" but sometimes just gloss over small choices that don't fit right) Ruby never did use the nickname, it was always "Cohen." James now... with how closed off James became and how he thought Jam ignored all his letters, he probably won't allow himself to use Jam's old nickname until way later. Also, oh no, my MCs are invading your brain. 😆😆😆

So you worked backwards from the nickname? I see. It's a really cute name and nickname. I remember seeing the comic you had drawn about the nickname scene before I started playing the game so I remember being very confused when only B was using it in the first game. lol. On another side note I'm currently reading a book where one of the character's is called January and I keep picturing your MC in her place. 😅

Oh, thanks for asking!! I actually figured out the nickname for January first, so I did it backwards. "Jam" nickname given by James Corvin because my MC loved to eat jam only sandwiches. Just jam, no peanut butter or anything else. From "Jam" I had to work out a first name that would fit. I was actually thinking of Jane, but I know that Jane is already used in the game so I had to consider other J names like Janice or Jeanine, but I wanted something more modern, and January has always sounded nice to me. P.S. I like the evolution of Ever to Everly as well.

No worries for the late reply, I do that as well sometimes. It WOULD be wild if we figured out the same thing! Unfortunately I promised the author I would keep my theory to myself. 😞 On a side note I noticed you liked a comment I made about being interested in some of the names of other MCs, your MC is one of them. So I'm curious as to why you picked the name January? (Especially if January was born in October iirc).

I absolutely love how jam packed this book is with lore. I'm noticing all the time how the characters start to say things or reveal things and then they can't. So much is being hinted at, I don't even think I know the full scope of it!

ckl

man so sorry for responding to your 2 month old comment but I'M SOOOO curious what you have figured out because I also think I figured something out and what if it's the same thing? that would be wild. you would have gotten there months earlier than me though!

My comments feel like they have been essays lately, sorry about that. 😬 I realized it too late but considering the pine trees and J’s eye color I can make evergreen puns too! I look forward to visiting the music room! I’m sure Everly does too! (In case you're curious, Mom was named after an author, since Grandpa likes books, [Harper Nelle Forst]. And I named Grandpa Wilder, so [Wilder Forst]. I am quite proud of Grandpa’s name, though I picked it on a whim at first.) I look forward to seeing if I can find those references. I’ve seen both movies. (Also the Mean Girls reference made me laugh when I noticed it, the Legally Blonde one took me a bit to remember what it was from.) I just MIGHT have a composition notebook (with little pine trees on it) that I set aside all for Fernweh, just so I can take notes, write questions I want to ask, and keep track of my info on my MC. I am (patiently) excited to read more. Oh no! The book DOES mean something! 😱 I'll have to give it a re-read. Well, there is no reason for YOU to remain curious. My concern is stealing your thunder so I’ll just send an ask (on tumblr) with what I think I figured out and you can just not post it or answer it so there is no need to confirm or deny OR have your thunder stolen. I would like to be surprised in finding out if I was right when the time comes. Also, sorry for the essay sized reply to your comment. 😔

I love how the home of the Couslands inspired Everly's name, especially that you considered the balance across her full name to include nods to both her mother and father. The name 'Everett' sounds lovely; it has a quiet dignity to it. The pun made me grin! I know Everly's past affinity isn't writing, but there is a nod to Poe in the Verner mansion; the additional room your MC gets to visit links to affinity. :D I was hoping for people to notice the Mean Girls reference, but the Legally Blonde One is technically even more missable with how the choices can shake out. You're right! The 'bend and snap' move R teases the MC about is from that movie. 💖 I watched the Shining recently, so I think I'm likely going to work a reference into Book Two. I already have a spot for Scream eventually; I'm so happy you love finding them. We're of a similar mind then, and mygosh I love that you view this aspect of TFS as a bonus, possibly adding an additional nuance to the overall narrative. I sometimes feel there are different wavelengths one can read the story on because of the foreshadowing/weaving mysteries. There is a more surface read of Book One, which is totally fine, but then others can realize there's so much more afoot in the town outside of the spriggan and the town border limitation. Oh, I'm very 👀 about you mentioning the grandfather's book; it was selected with care. It can lend itself somewhat to his passing, but also in a broader, darker sense too. Bambi! Yes, we will need to keep an eye on Bambi, dead or alive. How the tables have turned, because now I'm curious about what you've figured out, but I understand why you would wait! 🥰 The temptation of knowing what source of angst you spotted is acutely felt by me; there are lots of little blips of it sprinkled throughout that will grow when the time comes. I can't wait for you to confirm your theory! Visiting the Verners, Corvins, and more will likely give it a chance for it to crop up.

I was wondering if that elfroot thing was a Dragon Age reference. On a side note, where the Couslands (from the first game) are from, Highever, is what led me to Everly’s name. I always liked the Ever part of the Highever name and I also like other name places with Ever in it so I decided to see if there were any names with it… Everard, Everett (this will most likely be Dad’s name, since Everly got Mom’s surname I like to think her first name came from Dad), and finally Everly... Plus it’s funny because Everly’s RO has a corvid theme so I get to make Evermore puns instead of Nevermore puns. 🤓 I also love all the horror movie references (which I think I said before) since I absolutely love the horror genre. The Mean Girls reference with Ruby and Char was great too. Also, I think I spotted a Legally Blonde reference in the JR route? Onto the Lore. As I’ve already said this is one of my favorite aspects of your writing. I love it because I also overthink and it keeps my brain busy wondering what some of what you wrote might have meant, or if it meant anything at all. A favorite example: Oh MC got grandfather “The Island of Doctor Moreau” book for his birthday. Nice choice MC. *remembers what the book is about* Oh god! Why that book MC?! What does it mean?! Does it mean anything?! 😱 *glances suspiciously at Bambi* Thanks for the hint though, it gives me an excuse to re-read Book 1 (again). All that said, there is one thing I am 99% certain I have figured out waaaaaay before I was supposed to figure it out and I am dying to mention it, but I feel like mentioning it is going to steal your thunder so to speak because I know it will cause soooooo much angst. So I keep quiet and am waiting (im)patiently for it to come up.
