As far as I can tell, these facial composite artists are still a thing here in 2023, although it's more common to use computer generation to provide a rough approximation of a suspect. Perhaps in some other lifetime this is the career path I followed, adding yellow skin and overbites to every potential criminal.
According to Wikipedia, the FBI still claims hand-drawn facial composites are their preferred method. Arguably the most famous one of all time is from their files:
If you're not familiar, this handsome rogue is D. B. Cooper. They were never able to catch him. Not that I would know anything about that.
