True story— the Disney version is, according to their social media, supposed to be Latina. Which, as a Latino who doesn’t look or sound like most peoples’ stereotype of Latinos (ie Mexican), I kinda appreciate? Yay, for putting a blond-haired green-eyed Latina without an accent in?
But, there’s absolutely nothing in the movie actually even vaguely gestures in the direction of her being Latina, so it kind of feels like they wanted credit for “representation” without actually representing anyone. I dunno. I‘m not sure why I even mention it, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. It’s weird.
But anyway, I LOVE Big Hero 6– one of my all-time fav Disney movies.

I also totally assumed she was supposed to be kind of a hippie American white girl, but the diversity conversation goes awry real quick when you start getting into why such a thing even technically needs to get stated or directly referenced in the movie outside of, as you say, scoring diversity points. I do know that the voice actress for her in the movie is Latina, so there’s that at least. As a poster boy for white male American patriarchy who spent his adolescence on the border and has both an ex-wife and a fiancée who were both born in Mexico but raised in the states (I clearly have a type), this whole issue makes a TON of sense to me 😂
