Town Preferences (Preview)

29.10.2025 UPDATE: The debug string has been removed when moving to Brindleton Bay. A warning has been added when asking about the town of residence and birth sim without any home region. This doesn't affect all NPCs! Only those that you created and didn't move anywhere, rejecting moving in Manage Worlds.

16.10.2025 UPDATE: An error affecting players with missing packs has been fixed. There shouldn't be any more pack-related problems. A couple of strings were fixed, mostly in the Russian localization.

This mod adds likes and dislikes for towns, as well as new gameplay!

CAS Category

First, you can set Town Preferences in CAS for whichever town you like.

Assigning Preferences

The mod automatically assigns Town Preferences on launch for young adults and older sims, depending on their personality, aspirations, and occult type, which don't have preferences yet. It considers traits from "100 Traits Pack" by Chingyu as well. This is another way to assign Town Preferences besides the CAS mode.

Children and teens can also obtain preferences, but with a lower chance. Additionally, there is a small chance of obtaining new preferences after Self Discovery (from "Growing Together").

However, you can clear and assign new preferences to any sim. With testingcheats enabled, Shift + click on a sim and select "Clear Town Preferences," "Assign Town Preferences Automatically" if the sim doesn't have any yet, or "Assign New Town Preferences Automatically" to replace the existing ones.

Town of Residence

All sims in the player's households have a hidden status indicating where they currently live. Based on this status, a sim may react positively or negatively when moving to a new town if they have a preference for it.

This status updates when you move or split a household or use the "Add to Family" cheat on an NPC.

However! If you join a household via Manage Worlds or in-game events like a wedding, the status cannot be updated immediately. It will update after you relaunch the game or during certain in-game events.

I advise running a special cheat to update this status for all sims. With testingcheats enabled, Shift + click on a mailbox, then click "Update Town of Residence (For Everyone)." If you don't do this, some interactions with other sims may be strange (see the details below).

Plus, you can use this cheat if something went wrong (and let me know!).

Town of Birth

This mod tracks the town where a sim was born. For sims that existed before you installed the mod, the Town of Birth is the town where the sim currently lives. Family members and sims in the same household will know each other's Town of Birth.

For newborns after the mod is installed, it will be the location of their household. Their family and sims in the same household will automatically know where they were born.

However, you can also manually set the town of birth. With testingcheats enabled, Shift + click on a sim, then click "Change Town of Birth" in the Town Talks category. However, this will cause all sims to forget the town of birth for this sim.

Town of Birth is displayed as a gameplay visible trait.

It also affects sims' preferences. Most sims like a town where they were born. After all, it's full of memories and loved ones! Though, some may dislike it or not have any special feelings about it.

Social Interactions

Sims can ask each other about their town of birth if they don't know it yet, or after changing it via cheats. They can also ask about their town of residence. The latter is limited only by a time interval (once per day), as sims can move from one town to another and this is not shown to neighbors (obviously).

If sims have an opinion about a town where they live, they can discuss it with other residents, either admiring or complaining about it. Based on the opinion of the interlocutor, their mood, and their relationship with the actor, they may react positively, negatively, or neutrally.

These interactions are based on the Town of Residence, so you should keep it updated. Otherwise, you will see interactions and reactions about a town where this sim doesn't live. Use the cheat I mentioned above.

ATTENTION!

When asking about the town of residence and birth sim without any home region you'll only see a warning instead of town information. You should move this sim on any lot (you can evict them right after this action)

This doesn't affect all NPCs! In general, they all have a town of residence (it's a town where they were generated or created and evicted after). I'm talking about only those households that you created and didn't move anywhere, rejecting moving in Manage Worlds.

You didn't install the Lot51 Core Library correctly or you have an outdated version

No Town Preferences category?

You didn't install my version of the Custom Preferences mod correctly or you have the original version by Zerbu (it doesn't support my mod yet)

No auto assigning?

Make sure you have both the package and script, and you place it no deeper than one subfolder in the Mods folder

Replies, reactions or interactions mismatch where a sim is living?

You have incorrect Town of Residence status, probably after joining household or transferring sims. Use the 'Update Town Of Residence (For Everyone)' cheat on any mailbox

Relatives don't know the Town of Birth of each other?

There are some game limitations for who this status will be known, or maybe you changed the Town of Birth for this sim. Just use 'Ask About Town Of Birth'.
