Major Glow-Up: A Deep Dive into the A-4E Skyhawk's Systems

Attention, Pilots!

Last time, we were on the ground looking at the USMC's growing family of LVTP-5 variants. This week, we’re pulling back the canopy on the A-4E Skyhawk to give you an unfiltered, behind-the-scenes look at the incredible nitty-gritty work that goes into making an aircraft feel alive.

The progress over the last couple months, and even the last week has been so cool to monitor. There has been a major focus on the cockpit, damage models, and the endless list of technical tasks that turn a static object into an immersive war machine. I had never heard of this airplane before seeing the team start dev on it, and man did I fall in love with it. It is such an elegant and unique airframe. I hope you'll appreciate looking at this eyecandy as much as me!

One of many sets of texture maps Rodrigo laid out for this airframe before paint could be applied
Just when you thought ANZAC forces in Prairie Fire couldn't get any cooler.

For me personally, I just can't wait to see our friends down under able to enjoy the growing fixed-wing components of ANZAC forces in Prairie Fire through Nickel Steel. So sweet. And man, there's just something about jet aircraft with camo paint schemes. Good choices, New Zealand. Effing awesome.

Lighting Up the Night

One of the most exciting developments is our work on the cockpit lighting. To truly capture the feel of a night flight, we're using a two-pronged attack:

A first look at the cockpit's new emissive lighting.

It's a delicate balance of art and code, and the team is working closely to fine-tune the effect, ensuring every switch and dial is perfectly lit.

This combination of glowing dials and ambient compartment lighting is key to bringing the "front office" to life for night missions.

The Unseen Workhorse: Damage & Collision

A huge part of development that players rarely see is the creation of a vehicle's various "LODs" (Levels of Detail). Over the past week, the team has been in a deep back-and-forth refining the Fire Geometry LOD - the invisible model that the game engine uses to register weapon hits.

This was a masterclass in iterative development. Rodrigo would build the geometry, and Apollo would test it, providing detailed feedback on technical requirements like making sure the model was "convex" and properly closed. With additional tips from NodUnit, the team passed the model back and forth, tweaking tail sections, scaling wheels, and repositioning ladders until it was perfect. This painstaking process is what ensures damage is detected accurately, and it's now being used to build out the full, complex damage model, complete with visual effects for engine destruction.

"I promise, it was damaged before I ever touched it!"

A-4E Animation

Apollo has been going ham bringing the Scooter's cockpit to life with animations. Here’s a sample of what’s now functional:

This level of interactivity is crucial for making the player feel like they are truly in command of the aircraft.

The Crew in the Comms

This progress is a direct result of our team's incredible synergy:

We're in the thick of the most technical phase of the Skyhawk's development, and seeing all these complex systems come together is incredibly rewarding. The next steps will be to finalize the damage model, integrate the last of the emissives, and continue debugging as we move closer to the finish line.

Thank you for being our wingmen and making this possible!

OORAH!

These are my favorite type of posts. I love the behind the scenes deep dive write-ups.

Rob here - well done Sam - what a great overview - nod and i have been working on planes since jets dlc so we forget how complex the process is - there is a reason that many other DLCs have very few fixed wing aircraft - they truly are a labour of love. Well done Apollo and Rodrigo for this new aircraft joining the other aircraft of the SOG fleet!
