My guess based on wacky parasite live cycles is elfbane->dryad -> dryad dribblins infects insects -> insects get eaten by birds->metamorphosis and spreading in birds digestive tract -> ambulatory larvae dig into the earth and suck on tree roots -> grow into full elfbane
