Flat coloured sketches?

Hello, Wolfenstahl here.

First of all, the game is already done and is currently being tested for bugs.

If there are no last minute bugs, the second release of the game should be released later today.

Now, with that out of the way:

Some of you were talking to us on one of the last live streams about the possibility of doing a game with "flat-colour-sketches", as those are considerably faster to make than full quality artworks, while still looking awesome.

(example artwork in the attachment!)

The question of this vote is basically:

Do you think the quality of "flat-coloured-sketches" is good enough for game graphics?

Or is it too bland?

Please vote and tell us your opinions in the comments as well!

The voting will be going on for 2 weeks.

Also, please note:

We're currently NOT planning to do a game like this.

But we would like to hear your opinion on it, and maybe one day we'll get to work on a game in this quality.

We also frequently get hired by people to work for other people's games, and rarely it also happens that someone is commissioning a game directly from us (or is paying us money to create a small test game or something).

So, even though it's nothing of importance right now, we still want to hear your opinion so we're prepared for the future!

Some rough "data" on the matter:

As seen in the live streams, Cres usually takes about 30-60 minutes to finish a sketch.

(though it depends on what is depicted and in rare cases it might take a bit longer)

The flat-colouring ("base colouring") is done by Wolfenstahl (me), so it doesn't hinder Cres ability to work on something else.

Flat-colouring usually takes about 1-2 hours, depending on various factors.

(Details, what is depicted, how many characters, etc. etc.)

Cres will eventually do some minor touch-ups afterwards, but this is usually done within 15 minutes or something.

Full quality artworks on the other hand take about 4-5 times the time flat-coloured-sketches take.

This means, if we invest 2 hours (work times combined) into a flat-coloured-sketch, a full quality artwork with the same amount of details and stuff, might take between 8 to 10 hours.

And yes, this means, the workload on the artworks could be significantly reduced when creating a game with flat-coloured-sketches.

(less workload also means less budget needed)

This means, a game that would otherwise need 1 year to be completed, can in fact, be completed in 2-3 months.

(4 months if there are some delays)

So yes, depending on how this vote goes, maybe one day we'll be working on a small side project in this quality?

(or in case people don't like this quality of the artworks, we'll be not doing it)

Thank you very much for voting and giving us feedback, and see ya later today with Deathblight RPGs second release (hopefully, if there are no last minute bugs...).

aw, thank you UwU

This artwork style is already leagues ahead of other English games and many others. You could take it down a notch or two and still be considered high quality imo.

As long as it's not basic lineart (so it isn't difficult to recognize shapes), I think its fine. Another idea. I have no idea how feasible it would be, but I'll try to brainstorm just in case. I like to read some manga from time to time (NSFW too, for example Yamatogawa's Witchcraft is still one of my most favorite pieces of NSFW art, despite lacking any color whatsoever, but for having great art style and fun scenarios). So, what about maybe trying to go for more of a black and white manga style. Maybe it could lead to it looking more like a finished manga, as opposed to "unfinished" normal artwork.
