It would explain all the hatred towards them from the humans as they'd have likely lorded themselves over humanity at one point. Right up until humanity came up with aura, new weapons, or something to give them an edge to beat them back. Would have made a more interesting back story for how their society ended up the way it did anyway. Kind of like an Attack on Titans scenario. At least it'd be a better back story than Faunus look different so here comes the rampant racism.
