January 2025 - Day 11.1 - Juryo: 2 matches

First up is J13 Wakaikari taking on J4 Shishi. Both rikishi enter this Day 11 match with the same 9-1 record and a share of the lead.

Then I fast forward to get the match between J5 Aonishiki (9-1) and J2 Asakoryu (6-4).

Enjoy!

Earned a SLAP from Shishi! Hageshi indeed!

Match #1: spirited and close at the edge (mono-ii)! Ukrainians!

That Shishi match was the most intense of the day.

Wakaikari has really fun style to watch. Energetic and actionpaced. 10-5 should be rank increase of five ranks so strong possibility that J4/5 would be promoted. With Terunofuji retiring there is an extra spot in makuuchi and read couple of days ago that there might be nine guys in risk of falling to juryo. Naturarally they will not all fall as there are not that many guys to be promoted.

It is quite likely that both will be promoted with or without the yusho. Ten wins from J4 (Shishi) is not a guarantee, but it's very close. Of 27 instances in this century, only three men did not reach Makuuchi the next basho. It seems unlikely that Shishi will lose out, so he should finish with more wins than that. Ten wins from J5 (Aonishiki) leads to Makuuchi promotion about 2/3 of the time. Again, with four full days of sumo remaining, his final win total will almost certainly be higher. One more win should do it. It looks like there will be several passengers on the Juryo barge, so there should be room for several deserving promotees.

Thanks Jason for your coverage!!

Will we see both Ukrainians promoted this time? How will they decide where to put them on the bansuke? Assuming one of them wins the Juryo yusho.
