Abroad in Japan BIGGEST EVER Patreon Q&A + Our Bar Video Sneak Peak | Exclusive Video

Hey guys,

Hope you're all having a great start to the week.

The last week has certainly been bloody hectic, in between chatting with folks and knocking back cocktails at Lost bar, the launch of the cycle video, today's Abroad in Japan Q&A and filming in Kyoto with Natsuki for a video out early next month!

(Not to mention shooting a seriously important earthquake documentary in between).

All against the backdrop of one of the hottest summers I can recall in 12 years, with humidity off the charts and relentless typhoons inbound!

BUT the fun doesn't stop there.

We now have the awesome PATREON EXCLUSIVE Q&A, answering all your burning questions and it's the BIGGEST one I've ever done. There were honestly so many damn good questions, I tried to answer as many as I could! It's a great chance to answer some of those more private questions I'm not necessarily overly keen to chat about in full public view on Abroad in Japan as well.

And as a bonus, we've also got the first ever look inside Lost Bar awaiting you at the end of the video, a Patreon exclusive of the upcoming epic bar tour out this weekend.

These Q&A's are always a lot of fun to do as they're a great opportunity to discuss topics that wouldn't warrant a whole video, as well as make some silly sketches along the way, and in this one we even got to pick the great mind of Natsuki the man himself, something I'm keen to do more in the future.

For now though, I hope you enjoy the Q&A(s) and keep an eye out for the full bar video later this week!

Chris

This was the best Q&A video, thanks!

Albertas

I subscribed but even though there are some exclusive content that I cannot get acces to, can you fix it please

Deepo

Just finished the video where you opened the bar and I have to say that I am in tears. When you show the opening party and we see all your friends come to support you. I have to say I hope that my dream can come true and that I can visit Japan one day and go to your bar. My best friend and I have a list of things we want to do in Japan and most of them we discovered because of you and Sharla so adding going to Lost bar feels like the perfect addition.

Tonberry

I agree. His content has really helped me on days when my depression has tried to destroy me.

Hayley Khan

Oooh that would be so good!!

Hayley Khan

Thanks for this Chris! Yours has got to be one of the best value patreons out there! The bar looks epic! I think you need a new series made up of Connor’s “loo reviews”, I think lost bar passed the test! Can’t wait to see what else you have lined up for us!

Hayley Khan

Would be cool if you guys came to New Zealand. As a British ex pat (NHS refugee haha) who also previously lived in Japan I think you guys would both like it here :)

Ele

I really appreciate you taking the time to go a little deeper into the mindset of the Japanese. Sounds like the makings of a good film short. #askabroad How have you been able to live in Japan for so many years and be self employed? What is the criteria for residence in Japan?

MOKE AUTO

Whoa was that Mark that was tending the bar?

Jamie

I think if you asked most Japanese people would they rather have higher immigration to offset population decline, they would rather stick to the current situation. Japan works because everyone has the same upbringing instilled into them, the same ruthless education system that forces conformity upon the population and teaches Japanese kids to become good citizens. In the west we don't really do that - we focus on the individual above all us for the most part. So there's a fear that high immigration of folks who haven't been raised in that stringent Japanese environment, won't adhere to the rules, both written and unwritten in society and the fabric of the country will collapse. Things work here because people make sacrifices; social lives and family life is sacrificed for the good of the state and the collective. If a huge proportion of the population isn't on board with that, Japan will crumble rapidly. For sure, there's a degree of xenophobia amongst older generations, but xenophobia is a simplification of the overall situation with regards to immigration. Japan has a strong sense of identity; in Europe and North America you can pretty much live anywhere and adapt easier across culture. Here not so much. Tourism cuts through that; everyone turns up, blows their money and heads home. You can see why that's an attractive proposition! Still when all is said and done, immigration is rapidly growing in Japan and whether folks like or not, it's needed as the staff in Japan simply aren't there anymore. That's why most convenience stores in Tokyo aren't operated by Japanese employees; they're mostly Vietnamese and Thai folks.

Have you considered a $10 tier. Especially with plans for more documentaries and travel?

Pookha hare

See if Garnt would go with you to Thailand.

Pookha hare

Just here to say I thought the AIJ channel q&a was brilliant, and to say thank you for answering so honestly in both!

Soph

#askabroad How have you been able to live in Japan for so many years and be self employed? What is the criteria for residence in Japan?

MOKE AUTO

#askabroad. What are your views on the decline in Japan's population against the of the apparent xenophobic nature of its people? The country's population seems to have so many criticisms of tourists yet the government sees tourists as it's economic savior. Japan seems to want the tourists dollars but not the tourists themselves. Thoughts?

MOKE AUTO

Not at all! Happy to answer anything. Send me the question below.

Abroad in Japan

Best q+a! For me, Your documentaries Chris, are some of the best there are about people and life in Japan, they are so honest, respectfull and insightful. And to see in them your more thoughtful and caring side is a good and appreciated contrast to your usual funny and sarcastic side in the other videos! One about shinto would be very interesting indeed!!! And aren't there some similarities in stoicism and buddishm, like accepting the unchangeable and the awareness of death, what do you think?

Iris Meyer

Great video. Good luck on your upcoming projects!

And, now Patreon members need a secret password so we can get ‘patreon supporter’ bar napkins or something…

So much fun, NOW I have a question, what is the age limit for entering the bar? (I know drinking is 20) I’m going to be in Tokyo in November, and now I need to know if I’ll need to leave the teenager at the local Parco while I pop up or if they can come have a grapefruit juice or something.

Katherine Donaldson

Hey Chris you really want to conquer your fears (or at least control them) and you want to documentaries overseas, how about killing two birds with one stone and come to Australia.

Lynda Shortis

Just finished watching the video and my overall thoughts is that… We love you Chris. I don’t know if you realize just how much you and all this crazy experience that is Abroad in Japan mean to so many people everywhere. You have made the world so much better to so many and I fell privileged to be part of this adventure. And if the day comes that this adventure ends, well then, what will never end is the love and admiration we have for you. Hope to find you in the Lost bar and simply say this to you personally. Till then, be well friend.

Luciano Arrieta Martins

Wow treated to a sneak peak of the bar!

John Ho

Really enjoying the unscripted version! It's good to have a bit of raw and stream of consciousness content, very refreshing. Love your Q&A as always

Lhamo Fitzsimons

Thanks a lot for this amazing update! Love to see you still progressing and developing. Bit bummed that Abroad in a Pan isn’t making its return but I get that Health and Safety would be a major consideration. Cheers mate!

Frans van der Pol

Awesome, thanks for answering these questions. I'll be in Japan for like the nth time in October. I'll make sure to pop by the bar at some point. BTW, if you end up doing the Natsuki global travel series, I'm in DC and am happy to help arrange things!

Christina

Disappointed. only the soft ball questions being answered.

MOKE AUTO

Ah like a magic 🍹, I feel genuinely grateful for your videos, book, and all those creative audible and visual works of art you make...please stay healthy and well for as long as possible 🙏🏻 Abroad in Japan is a legend!

Putsies Mokies

The bar looks like a ton of fun! Can't wait to make another trip to Japan.

pipler

So excited for all the things to come! When you were talking about documentaries, I thought to myself "I hope he's gonna do one on earthquakes" and a second later you answered my question! While of course I adore your silly videos, I definitely especially look forward to the documentaries you make. They have such a unique tone and are beautifully made. Cannot wait to see how you elevate them with the crew you hired. And of course... I am ready do drink up all that LOST content! I wonder, does the name lost come from the Tolkien quote "Not all those who wander are lost"? I know you really love him, and I am a tiny bit obsessed with his booms as well :D P.S. Ngl seeing you answering my question at the end of the Q&A made me feel important ahah

Camilla Fontana

Woo looking forward to next trash taste appearance!

Caz T

Just like JaJ, your Q&A videos are a welcome classic!
