Upcoming sales tax
Added 2020-05-20 20:23:07 +0000 UTCHey all,
I've received word that on July 1st Patreon will be required to collect sales tax on pledges depending on state/country/provincial tax laws of the person pledging.
As I understand it, the amount will depend on whichever state/province/territory you are located in as a patron. It will be added automatically and while I'm still trying to make double-sure that there are things I can do to help mitigate it, its not something that can be helped.
I wanted to give everyone ample warning, of course, on anything that might have any kind of financial impact from patronage here. In my case, I'll likely still be able to keep my pledges to others at the same level, but I understand that things might drop off here because some folks are on tighter budgets, and art shouldn't take priority over things like food or bills.
This is out of Patreon's hands as well. They are being required by law to start adding this in, just as they had to do with VAT governing EU pledges. There are, of course, arguments for interpretations on whether patronage should count as 'goods' that are being purchased, but those are arguments for lawmakers and corporations. In this case, it simply will just be a 'thing'.
I just wanted everyone to know ahead of time. Thank you all for the support you've shown.

Its very much appreciated! I'm equally surprised that its taken so long for most countries/states to realize that they could tax this sort of thing too. Its probably why I'm not particularly angry over it, given most everything else sold that has some kind of 'value' in these parts are taxed. :/
