I'm going to be doing a lot of concept sketches (in addition to the paintings, of course) trying to get in gear for the comic/graphic novel thing that follows Cinders' story.
While I know about each event that happens in their journey, I actually have never sat and sketched out parts of the world that they might see, including the people. They were all just vague concepts laying in heaps in my head.
For this first one I worked on the human guards of Khivesk as a starting point. In this case a male and female guard in the generally common gear that the constables wear there. I took a bit of inspiration from what sailors from a colder nation would wear, the fact that they are multi-cultural in their ranks, and even a bit from some images that were in a Waterdeep guide for D&D.
They tend to wear layers given how cold the fall and even colder the winters get in that part of the world. They're a bit better armed than guards from towns along the coast due to having a large Javarran population (who are excellent tanners/hunters/skinners) and having one of the most prestigious academies to the arcane in their city: The Andormir.
They also tend to have Javarran among their ranks, since around 30% of the populace are Khavijas. I'll likely be drawing out some of the wolfish guard, as well as a citizens just to get a feel for what that place might look like since it features pretty early in the comic.
