Storefronts Scribbles!

A warm-up series of simple sketches done before working on this month's painting.  I love interesting storefronts.  When researching various 15th to 17th century storefronts I kept finding some amazing places that could be adapted to the style of cities in Felwroth, and what started as a side-research rummage turned into hours of my life just saving all sorts of buildings and storefronts.

In this case, its four places in the city of Sarcorra (city of spires), a larger city on it's own island nation off the western coast of the continent of Valhaadrune.  Its largely human and gnome-centric city with a dose of Lorrnathi and Khoraagi Orc peoples working the 'lower spires'.

Wrought Works:  A Lorrnathi run foundry that taps into the volcanic fire below the city.  Also one of the two foundries in the city with a royal decree to create trade-bars used by the merchant guilds.

Braden Linens:  An unassuming millinery tucked away in the Whaleshire district near the dockworks.  Mainly a supplier of raw linens as well as women's apparel.  Braden's daughter Cybillin now runs the shop, and applies her eye to helping the lower city look their best.

The Black Bottle:  Named for the Black Bottled scotch first brewed up by Umberlon Moorehost, a dusk-haired gnome who was once a peat farmer on the main coast.  Umberlon still runs this pub to this day, and lives in the upper levels of the tall building.  The establishment visited by citizens and travelers of more discerning taste in their spirits.

Valdenberg Books and Arcanieaum:  The premier store along the Oddblood Rowe leading to the Rencrost Enclave, the largest academy outside of Stokenfire on the mainland.  Valdenberg is like most who dabble in the occult and arcane, eccentric and at times hard to read.  Gnomish to the core, many of his signs tend to be in his native tongue or a mix of the two, but his wares, if one can deal with his eldritch filing system, are some of the best and strange one could hope to find.

Man, you don't go half way (or cheap!) with your history work. Great backgrounds you gave for each. I'm looking forward to seeing what role they play in the story. Makes me wonder what the characters will do there or what will happen while they are there. (The Black Bottle is obvious. Heh. ^_^) The "volcanic fire below the city" line makes me wonder if they have hot springs too. Would be nice for travelers to relax and recharge before going to the The Black Bottle or the Valdenberg Books store. Great start!

What is the degree of literacy in the city? Should there be more pictorial signs?
