Rough Sketches? - May 22nd

One of the main reasons I don't post really rough sketches is that I never really think folks would want to see the 'mad scribbles' stage of most of my roughs.

I know a lot of artists who can do some really defined and clean looking rough sketches in comparison.  When I start any sketch it's literally a lot of gesture lines followed by 'greying in' of something I have in mind.  I scratch in the basic anatomical shapes and try to do something around those (sometimes skeletal, other times it's literally a box I add lines to).

I had a couple people ask for views of these very, very rough stages, and while I'm flattered I don't actually know if its something most viewers online would want to see.

If its something most people would generally want to see, I'm happy to post them, though.  These are the very basic, shapes-and-scribbles stages.  Literally just ideas I add to a canvas and either work on in more detail, or that I file away for later.

So here's a sample of what these roughs would look like.  In this case its an image for a player's character, a Khavijas druid giving a 'boop' of fire to a tree.

If you all are okay with these sketches being in the mix, I'm fine with posting them as I go through them.  I just don't want to flood the steam with these or feel like I'm trying to pad out content for a month.  Usually I'll post the iterated version, after research and looking up reference images/models/etc.

These would be much the same way. Many might not go on to a final phase, or even get past the crazy scribbly stage, but some are iterative ideas that end up turning into a painting or final inked work. I'll start rummaging through the pile and see what I have stored in there :)

Some of the images I find in the sketch-dump archive I have baffle even me. Its like finding eldritch symbols that you were more compelled to draw than an idea. Many of the sketches are on building ideas with notes in the margins. Or lanterns, or various skulls of animals done in practice. A few are first and second drafts of covers I did a little while back as well.

Awesome, and thanks! I'll try to get some of the odd sketches I have hanging around in the archives posted. Some will have notes, others are.. just there for others to figure out :)

Many of the images I sketch out this way don't go on to final iterations. Some get a clean-up sketch put over them to make the idea a little more clear though. The image posted yesterday is one that probably will go on to a final colour since it's for a player in a game I'm running, but there's a lot of sketches of buildings and cultural clothing ideas that are just there as recorded ideas. Sounds like most folks wouldn't mind seeing them, so I'll see what I have :)

Some of these are just rough works that never go on to a final image, though many might have elements taken from them and put into paintings/comics and whatnot. Some are just rough sketches of buildings or strange ideas about elemental heat-sinks. I'll rummage the vault and see what I can start posting.

I'll have to compile some of the random rough-sketchwork that I have scattered around I think. I didn't know if there'd be interest in stuff this rough, but it could have some interesting bits. Many sketches have notes on them, and are done to just record an idea about a place, person or thing. I'll see what I can find :)

When my friends show me the WIP sketches, I save every version, as every update often has something different to it, something unique from the finished piece. And it's always an honor to see how a beautiful image like this got its start. Thank you for sharing!

I enjoy seeing sketches, especially ones that never get finished because it feels like a story that is beginning to fade into obscurity, but there are a few who still tell the tales. If anything it makes me more interested.

I for one really enjoy seeing your ideas and characters take shape and come to life. NO objections here!

I like the "sneak peaks." It's cool to see what you are thinking of and what's coming up. Besides, how much of these makes it to the "final round" as it is? I understand the padding concern, but everyone works at their own pace, so I wouldn't worry about it. Have fun.

It's hard to imagine any of us objecting to seeing WIP. It's neat to see the development from rough work \to finished awesomeness!

I think posting things like this would be wonderful. Of course I'm perhaps a touch odd, but even sketches are an enjoyable aspect of art!
