The Opening Of SkyDome (Second Gate)
Added 2024-06-05 07:00:08 +0000 UTCIn 1989, Toronto stadium SkyDome opened with a downpour of song and dance, questionable impersonations and the pure, unfiltired charisma of Canadian hero Alan Thicke.

2024-08-06 21:52:50 +0000 UTCFilipino diaspora is always fascinating to me—that said, I certainly believe you when you say Toronto has such a multicultural draw because I usually only see tinikling dance in typically insular Filipino gatherings—it’s just so culturally hyper-specific that I rarely see it, if ever, on anything near a global stage. Honestly, it’s pretty cool to learn these kinds of things in an unexpected way!

2024-06-14 12:50:30 +0000 UTCTorontos whole “thing” is being extremely multicultural so you’ll find a haven for pretty much any culture here

2024-06-10 00:05:00 +0000 UTCToday I learned that Toronto has been a haven for my Filipino brothers and sisters, as evidenced by the mention of a tinikling dance as part of the ceremony (“hopscotch with logs”)—I was super not expecting that at all, along with most parts of this insane ceremony.

2024-06-09 23:15:13 +0000 UTCI had to look up the infield fly rule and immediately understood what it is and why, and then just as quickly dreaded the idea of explaining it to someone who doesn’t understand baseball.

2024-06-07 00:28:45 +0000 UTCThe infield fly rule is when there's less than two outs and at least one runner on the bases. When there's a fly ball that doesn't clear the infield, the batter is automatically called 'out' and the runners CAN run if they want to, but its a really bad idea, because the ball is so close to the bases. Basically, it stops the fielding team from allowing the ball to hit the ground, which forces the runners on base to run to the next base. Essentially stops the fielding team from getting a double play 'for free'. Convoluted, yes indeed.

2024-06-06 12:28:27 +0000 UTCKinda related to this, have you boys recently watch the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, it’s got theme park special written all over it.

2024-06-06 01:59:27 +0000 UTCFun facts as a Toronto resident: the Blue Jays play on artificial turf so no grass mud in play there, and Scott you’ll be happy to know they just updated the seats in most of the arena to make them more comfortable over the last couple years

2024-06-06 01:58:14 +0000 UTCSo happy Jason also doesn't know what the "infield fly rule" is. I have no clue either and have never admitted it or bothered to just Google what it means.

2024-06-05 20:23:20 +0000 UTCOne year, my parents returned from their annual weekend trip to Toronto with a bounty of SkyDome merch, including one of these Domer hand puppets: https://i.etsystatic.com/13567464/r/il/efaa3b/5107093002/il_794xN.5107093002_5sxi.jpg Which I suppose raises the question: Is Domer cute?

2024-06-05 14:05:32 +0000 UTCMight be the only time I can bring this up because you mentioned Canadian baseball. I don’t think there’s even half an episode here but Youppi! the mascot is an interesting read. The first MLB mascot to be kicked out of a game by the umpires and when the Expos moved to DC he left baseball to become a hockey mascot.
