Enemy At The Gates

I do like this movie it's a great watch. As a movie it is very good because it evokes emotions, it has many turning parts, and it based in real events. However that's about as far as the authenticity goes. Also Dev if you are into dark comedy you really need to check out the movie called "The Death of Stalin." It is absolutely hilarious and actually pretty accurate to the events that took place in Russia during post WW2 I'm gonna go ahead and be that guy right now because I am a huge nerd when it comes to historical battles, wars, politics, etc. This movie is highly inaccurate on the events of what actually happened So I will kind of explain small pieces of the war that led up to this movie and the events depicted. ALRIGHT SO!, Stalin did something before the war broke out called "The Great Purge" Where he had around 750,000 people executed in and against the communist party so he could rise to the top of the political food chain. Stalin kept a war cabinet of extremely vicious and egotistical people that would do ANYTHING to stay in his favor they were really fucked up humans. So this great purge affected the whole country. The best strategists, doctors, scientists, etc were killed so when Nazi Germany turned on Russia THEY WERE NOT READY at all and got straight up BODIED for the first year. They declared war on Russia in 1941 launching a massive offensive that swept through Russia creating pockets of soviet soldiers and killing them. It was truly horrible. This battle that the movie depicts is called "The Battle of Stalingrad." This is where Hitler truly shit the bed. He made the same mistake that Napoleon made one hundred years earlier, YOU DO NOT INVADE RUSSIA UNLESS YOU CAN WIN BEFORE WINTER. So during the battle of Stalingrad was very bloody and bitter. It was straight up GUTTER FIGHTING due to the building being broken down to rubble. Fights happened from block to block, street to street, house to house, room to room. The casualties for the Germans was like over 800,000 and the Russian casualty rate was I think over 1,000,000. Truly gruesome. The Russians actually had a base set up across the river where they kept the men. The train line was a few miles from the bank so the Russian soldiers actually would take the train, get out of the train. jump into trucks and be transported to the river where they then took the boats over to the Russian occupied territory of the city. This doesn't mean that there wasn't bombings and planes attempting to stop these boats and trucks that was very real. I think the director just took a very "Western" approach with the movie basically saying "Russians Bad, Germans Bad." The "One man gets the rifle, one man gets the stripper clip" is a myth. Everyone was actually trained with their weapons and had them before they even got off the trains, However the units that were already over in Stalingrad did run low on ammo so they did have to preserve what they had and make their shots count. WHAT THIS MOVIE DID GET RIGHT THOUGH!! Was the Propaganda! Both the Germans and the Soviet forces absolutely thrived on their propaganda. Even if it was blatantly not true or exaugurated ten fold they fed their population so much bullshit because that's the only way you can keep a Communist and Fascist country running, by telling them a whole bunch of lies to boost their morale. I think this movie did good depicting that. As always great review Dev, can't wait for your next one. I absolutely love how hyped you get when the shit pops off. Not only that but you catch the little details and express your true thoughts on everything. You're the man! Thank you for reminding me this movie existed and thank you for giving me some laughs and a good partner to watch it again with. Movie: 7\10 Historical Movie 2\10
