LEOs have their jobs to do. Medical professionals have their jobs to do. Everyone has their lanes. It seems this medical professional cannot tell LEOs how to do their jobs. LEOs observe, report, book. There are things that are left up to the courts. It seems these concerns should be addressed to state legislators.

It’s not the responsibility of Law Enforcement to make decisions about people’s mental health. All they can do is be there to assist or arrest when laws are broken and they become involved.

I suppose that health professional is adept in every other profession as well. How does he expect anyone to know everything? He’s not rational.

It is not the responsibility of the channel or the officers to make that determination. If she suffers from mental illness than someone who is family or friend should encourage her to seek help. They can only work with what is in front of them. If it’s mental illness then her symptoms are not clear enough for non medical personnel to make that determination.

Health mental issue is number one issue that we are dealing with as a society , I hope the public take this as a lesson , and find a way to address the issue and not to be little the individual, sure as humans with freewill we do have to face consequences of our actions but again the rabbit hole is way deeper than people think !!!!!

Actually since police tend to be the first responders they should be trained with skills on how to deal with an individual with crisis , and recognize it , but yes, though this does not mean the person in distress has the right to do whatever they want

I just don't think it's a determination the cops need to make, I know that there are nurses on staff at the jails who can make that determination and if they can't they probably should be qualified to at least make a general assessment when the person's off the streets

And one other thing, this person states that when someone with bipolar is in a manic state they cannot control their behavior….he’s correct. HOWEVER….these people can control whether they take their medication and can take it or just decide they don’t like the side effects and not take it. Then you get the bipolar disorder side and you cannot reason with them. People with bipolar disorder can be in control of their lives but most will choose not to be by not taking the medication.

First of all, this email is probably accurate. My dad is bipolar and I’ve seen similar behavior from him as I was growing up as well as many other behaviors. During his abusive tirades with me and my mom, the psychiatrist the court ordered us to see never once addressed him being bipolar or as having a narcissistic personality disorder…these were diagnosed many years later. My dad was never in any trouble with the law as an adult other than from the domestic abuse issues and those mainly came from his drinking alcohol. With that said, why is it we blame law enforcement for doing their jobs when someone views it as a failure to do justice? LEOs can be easily punished for their mistakes and shortcomings but what about the mistakes and shortcomings of other agencies and professionals such as our court system, state prosecutors, defense attorneys and probation officers that continuously fail by releasing these people back into a society that they cannot live a normal life without some form of supervision. Bipolar disorder varies so much in each person and some can go on with very normal lives as long as they have medication and a treatment plan. Maybe the person that sent this email should instead try reaching out to the court and telling them what they are seeing or contacting a psychiatrist that can help her in that location to try and get her from being in this situation again. But as others have stated, her mental health problem cannot be her allowance to get out of jail when she does something wrong or illegal. For all we know, she has been diagnosed as bipolar and given medication but has decided not to take it because that is a very real problem with bipolar patients. It was with my dad.

Police aren’t mental health professionals. They are there to MAINTAIN THE PEACE. Their job at best is to take the person off the street and get them to PROPER MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS. They are not doctors or psychologists. This E-mail is inferring all police now should now be ordered to go through some sort of medical program to diagnose mental health issues?! They have enough to do with protecting people and the LAW. What happened to “being responsible for one’s self”? Freakin WAY TO LIBERAL thoughts thinking police are a cure all stop measure…

Just because you are mentally ill doesn't mean that you can do whatever you want. The cops aren't there to diagnose or treat mental illness. They are there to take disturbances to the public to jail.

Mental disorder is not an excuse for criminal behavior. Medical professionals like this love to make excuses for the criminal while refusing to acknowledge the harm they cause others. Mental disorder or not, laws are laws and you’re responsible for your own actions, she should be committed until well if she’s too mentally unstable to control herself in repeated instances.

To be fair he is more respectful than your other emailers😂

There is definitely context that we will never know. I can see what this person is talking about and its applicable. Maybe this woman was in this state because she was withdrawling? She just got out, so the rational thing would to be not break anymore laws. I think the email would warrant a pinned comment but at the end of the day, she broke laws and was held accountable. Its really up to the system to see that she gets help.
