This mahogany-framed compass is wrapped in leather and fixed with a brass clasp mechanism. It is painted with an eyeball where its orienting lines would be, and it lacks directional markers. A small ruby is set into the middle of its needle and a small iron hand with its pointer finger outstretched caps the needle at one end. Rather than pointing north, this compass directs its user to a specific object or person they are looking for. Describe or name an object or person that is familiar to you. The compass points in the direction of the object or person’s location, regardless of its distance. The compass works perfectly if you have seen the object or person before within a distance of 30 feet. Otherwise, each day, the compass has a 50% chance of pointing in the exact opposite direction of its target until the next dawn.

This compass was crafted by a famed cartographer and explorer from the age of antiquity with the help of a powerful gnomish mage. The explorer was beset by vivid visions of ancient ruins that were unfamiliar to her. Though she tried to ignore them, the visions persisted. Convinced the gods wanted her to find them, she crafted the compass to aid her in her journey.
