You really have to understand the cultural difference here. Vikings had very little farm land, so they had to hunt and pillage, so their entire culture and religion was constructed around that concept. People also didn't live to an old age so dying in battle wasn't seen as cutting off a large chunk of your life. The whole Norse religion is built around the idea that to get into "Heaven" you had to die a warrior's death.

Also you're very correct about how people romaticise war, even today people romanticise it, fighting for their country, religion, people. I dont think its an issue of people wanting to protect for what they believe in, but treating it like its a game, like the guys in Thor's village see it as is especially naive and dangerous.
