I really think that Serie is not gate keeping magic out of fear. It's more out of a mix of contempt for humans and coping with her own feelings. I think Serie is an elf way older than Frieren and is way later in her "how many people I care about have died before me" journey then Frieren is and more represents one of the possible routes Frieren could have ended up on if she hadn't met Himmel

2024-07-25 12:30:36 +0000 UTCFlamme's master, Serie, is the world's biggest tsundere grandma. She pretty much means the opposite of everything she says, and all of her actions contradict her words. Please keep that in mind, and you'll understand her better. Serie: "I'm not sad. I only trained her on a whim. Now walk with me while I fondly reminisce about all the little details I remember of her, through the flowers that she loved, and brag about all of her amazing accomplishments." This is how Serie is. I feel she's lived for such a long time that she does this as a way to avoid getting too close to anyone. But she genuinely does care for those she trains.
