As far as I knew, when I first watched One Piece as a child, the Merry was destroyed and the entire crew was killed because there weren't any more episodes of One Piece after that! The original English dub was such a colossal pile of crap, but it did make for some funny moments

It sorta feels aimless until it all makes sense later on. Among fans it's generally considered a "love it or hate it" kind of saga. Some have even skipped this saga entirely. Interested to see how you'll feel about it by the end.
