Glazing Ears / African Painted Dog - 2025

I’m applying the second pass on this African wild dog (also known as the painted dog). The underpainting—done in a mix of raw umber, white, and yellow—is now completely dry. My job at this stage is to create a thin film of color over it, working with opaque passages of Yellow Ochre, Indian yellow and Van Dyke brown. In the ears, I first glazed a warmth of transparent oxide red, then painted into it with lighter and darker pigments to build the texture of the fur.

I need a medium of half linseed oil and half orderless mineral spirits for my under painting, but only minimally. The more oily paint comes in the second layer generally

Good question, no, the value is in the first pass do not reflect the values of the second pass, the second pass usually has brighter colors, more chroma, and darker darks, I would say that the grisaille is generally more compressed in value than the final pass.

Hi Colleen, thank you for the footage. I have a couple of questions if I may. ・Do the values in the second pass match the values of the underpainting? ・If the values in the second pass match those of the first, does that mean the final value structure is already established in the initial stage?

Thank you for this! When you decide to do an underpainting instead of painting directly on a ground. Do you opt to use walnut oil or an odorless mineral spirit mixed with linseed?
