BRIEFS

Anthropic Judge Blasts $1.5 Billion AI Copyright Settlement
TOM: Following yesterday's news that Anthropic would pay $1.5 billion to settle a copyright lawsuit with authors, Judge William Alsup has rejected immediate approval, seeking more information about which works are covered and how authors could be notified and compensated for their works. Alsup shared concerns that the settlement might be pushed forward without proper oversight, resulting in some class members being left out. Alsup set a September 15 deadline for a complete list of works involved and has insisted on clear, workable claim methods for all those involved.

Claude can create PDFs, slides, and spreadsheets for you now in chat
JASON: Speaking of Anthropic, Claude now lets users create PDFs, slides, and spreadsheets directly in chat. Anthropic says the new feature turns raw information into structured data types and must be enabled in settings. Anthropic warns users that their data "may be at risk" due to the tool's broad file access and analysis. Max, Team, and Enterprise customers will gain the new capabilities with Pro access coming soon.

Google pulls the Pixel 10’s Daily Hub to ‘enhance its performance’
TOM: Google has paused the Pixel 10's Daily Hub, a premier AI-powered feature that offered weather, calendar events, and curated recommendations based on the user's broad scope of data. This comes just two weeks after the launch of the new phone. Daily Hub was denoted as a "preview" inside the interface, and early feedback was that the feature wasn't quite effective in providing useful information as promised. Google says it is working to improve the experience and performance before it returns to the phone.

Xbox is coming to cars thanks to an LG and Microsoft partnership
JASON: Microsoft and LG announced that Xbox Cloud Gaming will soon be offered in vehicles that use LG's Automotive Content Platform. The new Xbox app lets Game Pass Ultimate subscribers stream cloud-based Xbox titles on the in-car screen for passengers to play while in transit and while charging. The new feature, powered by LG WebOS, is designed for use on in-car back-seat displays and not front-seat dashboard displays. At launch, the new feature will arrive on the Kia EV3 in Europe, with support planned for the upcoming Kia EV4, EV5, and latest Sportage models coming soon.

Signal Adds Support for Secure Backups
TOM: Signal has launched a Secure backup feature, allowing users to back up chats and media as encrypted archives. It currently works in the Signal Android beta with an opt-in requirement. The previous 45 days are backed up for free, with a $1.99 monthly fee to back up older data. The backups use a 64-character recovery key stored on the device. This is Signal's first paid feature, and a broader rollout to iOS and desktop users is coming soon.

‘Shake to summarize’ a webpage in Firefox when running iOS 26
JASON: Mozilla added a new Shake to Summarize feature to Firefox on iOS 26, using Apple Intelligence for on-device summaries on the iPhone 15 Pro and newer. Older iPhones will still get summaries, but those will be done with Mozilla's own AI servers. Users can shake their device or tap a thunderbolt icon to kick off the summarization that supports up to 5,000-word web pages. The new feature supports English sites in the US at launch with plans to expand to more languages and regions later.

HELPING EACH OTHER UNDERSTAND

JASON: We end every episode of DTNS with some shared wisdom. Regarding Monday’s story about the Raspberry Pi chip being used to sense heartbeats, and Robb’s joke about the tricorder, Arthur had some added wisdom.

TOM: Arthur wrote:
Clearly the Raspberry Picorder would need to contain 3.14 sensors....

Currently on vacation in France, there's a couple of times that I've been eavesdropping a tour group that isn't in English. Live translation would be good to learn a little more. i love using having two physical SIM slots with the option for eSIM. I use one for personal, one for work, and then swap the work for a travel eSIM since I usually give my personal mobile number for booking hotels, flights, tours, etc.

You joke about gaming while driving, but I still think of the people I've seen causing traffic problems because they were playing Pokemon Go while driving...
