BIG STORY
Lenovo updates its beefiest and bulkiest laptops
IFA 2025: Lenovo Opens Show with Three Exciting New Proofs of Concept
Legion Go 2 official: Lenovo’s new flagship handheld costs $1,099 — and up
JASON: Lenovo is making this year's IFA a big hardware showcase event for its upcoming products, so let's take a look at them!
First, laptops. Lenovo launched several new ThinkPad laptops targeting power users and professionals. The ThinkPad P16 Gen 3 has Intel's latest Core Ultra 200HX up to 24 cores and up to 192GB of RAM. That laptop is the most expensive of the bunch, starting at $3,339.
The ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 ramps things down a tad, with a lighter and thinner unit that still includes Intel's Core Ultra 200 H series processors starting at $2,819.
The Legion Pro 7 is meant for gamers, with a 240Hz OLED display and up to an AMD Ryzen 9955HX3D and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5080. Those 6 pound beasts start at $2,399.
And Lenovo also shared three other gaming machines ranging from $699.99 to $1099.99.
HUYEN: Lenovo also shared some concept PCs, including a ThinkBook VertiFlex that features a 14-inch display that can rotate 90 degrees into vertical mode, perfect for coding, writing, and document wrangling.
Also shown as a Smart Motion Concept stand that uses sensors to orient the laptop with the user, including gestures and voice controls. That's ideal for ergonomics and accessibility applications.
The NaturaSynth Display mimics natural light by using hardware-driven zero blue light technology to bring blue light down to less than one percent.
JASON: Gamers will want to check out the Legion Go 2 (Gen 2), Lenovo's upgraded gaming handheld with an 8.8" OLED touchscreen display, signature detachable controllers, and improved ergonomics. Also, hall effect joysticks and full compatibility with the previous generation. The Windows handheld is priced at $1,049 and ships in October in the US.

BRIEFS
You can now attach 10,000 character blogs to your Threads posts
HUYEN: Meta's Threads now lets users attach text documents up to 10,000 characters to posts, pushing far beyond the standard 500 character limit. Users can tap a new icon to open the word editor, with formatting options like bold, italics, underlines, and strikethroughs offered up in a toolbar overlay. Those text attachments will sit below the main post, and readers will need to expand them to read. Links in the post will also appear as an attachment.
Google Fined $3.5 Billion by EU Over Ad-Tech Business
JASON: The European Union fined Google $2.5 billion for abusing its dominance in the digital ad-tech industry, saying Google has "inherent conflicts of interest along the adtech supply chain.” EU regulators say Google's ad-tech practices unfairly limited competition, hurt rivals, and may warrant the divestiture of some of its business. This is the second largest antitrust fine ever in the EU, after 2018's ruling against Google for anti-competitive practices related to its Android OS. Google is also involved in a similar case in the US that is expected to go to trial later this month.
Everything Apple Plans to Show at Sept. 9 ‘Awe Dropping’ iPhone 17 Event
HUYEN: Apple's September 9 "Awe dropping" hardware event will of course reveal new iPhone 17 models with a redesigned back plate along with the iPhone 17 Air. But Mark Gurman on Bloomberg shared more details about what else to expect, including the Apple Vision Pro's first hardware update. Don't get too excited, though, as the changes are minor including a new chip upgrade from the current M2. Apple has tested both the M4 and M5. There's also consideration of a new space black color. Apple also plans to bring a brighter display and satellite connectivity to the Apple Watch Series 11.
OpenAI links up with Broadcom to produce its own AI chips
JASON: OpenAI will launch its own AI chip next year in a partnership with Broadcom. The custom chip is set for internal use only. OpenAI's move follows what other major tech companies, like Google, Amazon, and Meta, have done in recent years, shifting their own reliance on other company's hardware, like Nvidia, toward their own solutions.
OnePlus and Hasselblad are ending their five-year partnership
HUYEN: OnePlus and Hasselblad are ending their five-year partnership as OnePlus develops its own camera system called the DetailMax Engine. No reason for the split was shared. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau is testing a prototype of the new camera system which aims to bring clearer images to the company's phones. The OnePlus 14 is set to be the first phone without the Hasselblad name printed next to the camera. Parent company Oppo, meanwhile, has renewed its partnership with Hasselblad for its future products.
Google Photos now lets you animate your camera roll with Veo 3 for free
JASON: Google Photos now offers free users a way to animate their camera roll with an upgrade to Veo 3 integration. Veo 2 was used inside of Google Photos beginning in July, but now the update brings Veo 3's higher-quality results to all free accounts with strict daily limits, unspecified for now. However, the Google Photos creations will not include sound generation, a major feature that was launched as part of Veo 3 earlier this Summer.
Facebook is trying to make ‘pokes’ happen again
HUYEN: Facebook is trying to make poke cool again. Users will soon find the classic poke feature appearing more prominently on user profiles in an effort to appeal to younger users. Users will still be able to track poke counts with friends and will be notified when they are poked. The feature never went away, apparently, and younger users have been using it lately, seeing a 13x spike in use last year. Users can track pokes at facebook.com/pokes.

HELPING EACH OTHER UNDERSTAND
JASON: We end every episode of DTNS with some shared wisdom. Today Chris points out an interesting wrinkle in the Dolby Vision 2 announcement we discussed earlier this week.
HUYEN: Chris writes:
Hello,
Samsung has never and probably never will support Dolby Vision. They only support the competing equivalent HDR+ (which they help develop), but it has kinda lost the content format war. Samsung has said it's because HDR+ is license-free. It seems Samsung thinks if they stick in long enough HDR+ will win, or they are in a sunken cost fallacy. LG and Sony only support DV and HDR, not HDR+, while some (Philips and Panasonic) also support HDR+. Best would be if everyone supported both HDR+ and DV and let the content war play out.
