I think there is a place and time for big grandeur events for product announcements and a time and place for just press releases. In the early days of technology (like the iPhone) I feel that big shows were important, they helped show off the technology, get people excited about something new. I think this also works for major design changes as well. If a company is just upgrading the nuts and bolts on the inside, why not just a press release with some specs - these upgrades are not as exciting as seeing the shiny new toy. Of course, I may be bias because I love shiny new tech and a little flash of fancy makes me open my wallet.
