The Ten - Introduction

Amanda sat at her vanity, staring at her reflection. The ambient light from the table lamp softened the contours of her face, but it couldn't hide the weight of betrayal in her eyes. She picked up an elegant crystal glass filled with red wine and took a slow sip, her mind racing through the names of the men who had wronged her.

1. Jason: Her older brother was the first man who had let her down. When they were kids, Amanda had always looked up to him. She wanted to be an artist, and it was Jason who told her that her dreams were foolish, a waste of time. He went as far as tearing up her sketches and laughing at her attempts to paint. "You'll never make it," he'd sneer. His words became a self-fulfilling prophecy, haunting her at every turn and making her doubt herself. This betrayal was her first introduction to the disappointment men could bring into her life.

2. Derek: Her first love, and her first lesson in heartbreak. They had met in high school, and everything seemed so perfect. Six months into the relationship, she discovered that Derek was cheating on her with her then-best friend, Emily. The betrayal was a double whammy, stealing away her trust in both love and friendship.

3. Paul: Amanda met him in college, and he seemed like everything Derek wasn't—attentive, kind, and respectful. They dated for half a year, envisioning a future together, only for him to vanish without a trace. No calls, no texts, just radio silence. She later found out he had transferred schools and was dating someone else, erasing her from his life as though she meant nothing.

4. Ethan: Emotional manipulation was Ethan's game. He knew how to say the right things to make Amanda feel special, but behind closed doors, he twisted her insecurities to keep her under his thumb. "You're lucky to have me," he'd say, making her feel like she was the problem when he'd act out.

5. Matt: They met at a friend's wedding and dated for a year. Amanda thought he was 'the one,' until she found a wedding ring hidden in his drawer—not for her, but a leftover from his current marriage. She was the other woman, and he had been leading a double life.

6. Mark: Her boss at her first corporate job. Amanda worked tirelessly, often staying late to complete projects. Yet when it came time for promotions or raises, Mark would overlook her, favoring male colleagues who were less competent but more willing to be his "drinking buddies."

7. Greg: A family friend she'd known since childhood. When Amanda went through a difficult period in her life, he started a rumor that she was mentally unstable, causing a rift in her family relationships and making her an outcast during family gatherings.

8. Troy: Her college professor was an intellectual bully. Amanda was enthusiastic about the subject he taught and regularly participated in class. But he'd belittle her points and ideas, often openly mocking her in front of her peers, making her dread the class she had initially loved.

9. Neil: He lived next door and seemed friendly enough at first. However, his casual greetings became unsolicited advances, and before long, he was stalking her, making her feel unsafe in her own home.

10. Kevin: A close friend for many years, or so she thought. Kevin revealed her deepest secrets on social media, betraying her trust in the most public way possible. The humiliation was intense, costing her friendships and affecting her mental health.

Tonight, Amanda had decided, enough was enough. She had heard whispers of a woman named Morgana, a mysterious figure who could grant the darkest of desires. As the clock struck midnight, Amanda entered a dimly lit room, where Morgana waited.

"The cost is high," Morgana warned, offering her a black feathered quill and an ancient parchment, "but your revenge will be sweet."

"I'm ready," Amanda said, her voice firm with resolve.

One by one, she wrote down their names. As she did, Morgana chanted incantations, filling the room with a dark, palpable energy. "On the 31st of October," Morgana spoke, "each will receive an invitation to your Halloween party. They will be compelled to attend. But none will arrive...not as they are."

A sinister smile crossed Amanda's lips. For the first time in years, she felt empowered, invigorated, alive. This Halloween, the tables would turn. Revenge would be hers, and it was about time.
