Chapter 10 - This needs cleaned, and added to but let me know what you think.

“Welcome to the faction?” Enora’s voice sounded the same as before, but in perfect English, and a slight accent that sounded vaguely…Australian? Or not quite, maybe Australian and England mixed?

“I don’t feel very welcome.”

Seriously? I’d say all things considered we were basically rolling out the red carpet.

I folded my arms. “What exactly did you expect? We’re not the ones who raided your planet.”

Honestly. She was acting as though she had done ...

Chapter 9 - Chapter will be longer from this point on, I just wanted to get this out there.

There wasn’t much organizing to do. We had our best and highest-level fighters in the front, everyone with unevolved classes would lag.

“Are we ready?” I still didn’t like the idea of attacking them. I drew out Tranquility. She was already glowing blue. Not because they attacked us, but because they weren’t open to not attacking us.

Durkil loomed next to me holding his Warhammer in two hands, thick blue armor covering him head to toe.

“We’re re...

Chapter 8 - Thank you to everyone who stuck around. The plan moving forward is to get back to 15 chapters ahead. And I am writing a lot more now.

I’d seen negotiations like this in movies. Two armies ready to launch into action at the smallest provocation–leaders puffing out their chests to indicate their confidence. Ellison was a natural.

He appeared built for these exact moments. His white cotton shirt was clean and pressed, leather pants and jacket all in good repair. His grey fur complimented the simple attire and his posture defied the humble attire. His antlers were free of tassels, unlike Daevon and Durkil. He looked a...

Chapter 7 - What do you think is about to happen? Also is there anything else that people would like from Patreon? I want to do something special for my first 250 members. Any ideas? Thank you all so much for the incredible support and I hope you are still enjoying the chapters.

“I’d feel much better if Mischief was here.”

The raid was fast approaching, we had everyone gathered together near the clearing where we knew it would appear. Jared normally didn’t bother himself with raids but this one was expected to be different.

“He’s got his own problems right now. It’s ok–we’re going to be fine.” I reassured Jared.

Our faction had come a long way since the first raids. Alex and Durkil both cast imposing figures.&nb...

Chapter 6 - I'm a freaking stealth Archer

Mischief lounged casually on a rock next to a small cliff face.

Below and around him, the mana-twisted cats were restless. Some played in the trees, some prowled about, while others lounged.

More than once over the last five days, Mischief wondered if he had made a terrible mistake saving them.

They were wild, unpredictable and worst of all–annoying. Even as he thought it, one of the striped mana cats plummeted from a branch and landed on Mischief’s head. He ...

Chapter 5

One last night before the next raid was scheduled.

My day was spent wandering from place to place checking in on our faction. Jessica was close to harvesting her first crop yield. They were also in the process of building several more houses near the fields. Three large families had classes well suited for working with Jessica and she welcomed the help.

There were a few others that had crop adjacent skills one around alchemy the other around baked goods. They were also...

Book 2 - Chapter 3

I stood and stretched my back, grateful to be done with the long planning meeting.

It’s not that I didn’t enjoy the meetings—I liked seeing how our faction was growing. It was satisfying to see how far we had come from our humble beginnings when it was just Mischief and myself.

The council funneled out of the armory into the warm summer air. After being in the stuffy room for hours it felt amazing to be out in the open again. The council dispersed to their differ...

Book 2 - Chapter 2

Five days since Tom was memorialized. Faction Layton Mischief had its first ideal.

Ellison, Jared, Durkil, Alex, me and several others crowded into Damon's forge. Large bodies made the space feel cramped, the scent of Iron, sweat and wood hung stale in the air.

Racks of armor and weapons were stuffed into the back room, replaced by several rows of benches.

They needed a bigger space for all the council meetings. Jared insisted on meeting often to stay aligned. As...

Chapter 1 - New Boise.

Martin sat hunched over a small desk just outside the bedroom he shared with Claire. He had never been much for extravagant things and this little home suited him for now.

Up until a few days ago Martin and Claire were still living in their pre-induction home. That was before the refugee’s came pouring in.

He’d offered his home immediately. Now every room, every hallway, even the porch was full—and still, it wasn’t enough.

More people flooded in each day....

Epilogues

Epilogue one: Zortana and Stacy

Stacy rested her hands against a large pine tree and peered around it. She watched her target pull the dead man's body from the large spear.

“Well that was really close. We almost got him.” Stacy said in a sweet flowery voice.

“Close!?” Stacy flinched. “We had the opportunity of a lifetime and that stupid glowing man ruined everything!”

“It was destiny! Why else would we have stumbled into such good fortune? We timed ...

Chapter 86 - The end of book one. We move to epilogues and then straight into book 2

I could sense Alex at my side. He was speaking to me. I couldn’t hear them through the ringing  in my ears.

My health had to be near the bottom. But I wasn’t thinking about my health anymore. The only thing that I could manage to think about was how unfair this world was.

Why did things have to be so twisted? I’m a healer. But I was too terrified to try to heal again. Even if I could somehow manage to fight through the pain, my spells weren’t working. What...

Ch 85 - Thank you for all the support and patience. I am working hard to catch up.

The ground shook as the Cyclops thundered closer. I didn’t even have the strength to stand and face them.

I wondered what death was going to feel like. Quick–I hoped. Then again, it had already been pretty damn painful up to this point.

It was a strange feeling to accept my own death. On one hand, I was terrified. Would I still exist? Would my thoughts persist into the afterlife? Or would I fade into the void?

Soon enough I would find out.

Ch 84 - I haven't cleaned this up yet.

In the months this world had changed violence and death had become familiar to me. Part of me felt a thrill as the wind buffeted my robe as my stat enhanced legs pumped against the rough earth.

Another part of me fought back at that thrill, that part of me was just a whisper now though. I had made my choice. I would exchange the lives of those I judged unworthy to grow stronger.

A massive bolt fired from a crossbow whistled in front of me. Over a hundred well armored a...

Ch 83 - I appreciate everyone's patience. I started a new job and I feel like I am drowning. I hope this weekend I can get caught up on the 15 chapters. Forgive me!

The cyclops attack had happened in a split second. As quick as it was, I had seen it coming.

I dropped low and let the spear zip past. The attack confused me. It seemed like a huge gamble. It was just me and the Cyclops–the rest of his army was still a good bit away and now the cyclops was completely unarmed.

Without hesitation I lunged forward out of dodge, dirt and rock spit out as I dug my feet into the ground.

Is that all this world was? Was the entir...

Ch 82 - Were getting close to the end of book 1

The streets were a beehive of frantic movement. Everyone scrambled to either hide or force their way towards the portals.

It was too slow to just push my way through. People were being killed–I didn't have time for this. Three months ago I had made a rule. Keep your feet firmly on the ground. And yes–technically I had broken that rule a couple times in the bandit dungeon when I had to leap onto their walls–I had yet to put my stats to full use.

At level 31 my str...

Ch 81 - I really appreciate the feedback so let me know what you think!

The head rolled away and Jordan’s body fell forward into the mud.

[Level up]

For what felt like an eternity the world stood still. The only thing that felt real to me was the hilt of my sword as it rested in my hand.

For some reason, it was impossible for me to pull my eyes away from the body. I had just gone from never killing a human being, to killing two.

Did I believe they both had it coming? Definitely. Jordan was a terrible human being. What i...

Ch 80 - It's a short one

Children?

My hands began to shake. Jordan had proven himself a failure—a narcissist, a liar, a murderer. The worst kind of man.

But this?

“Children?”

The words tumbled out, husky barely a whisper.  I didn’t want to believe it.

A hand rested on my arm.

“Layton?” Ellison’s voice was soft, concerned.

I looked at my friend. He met my eyes—his hand fell and he stepped away.

“How ma...

Ch 79 (I really hope you guys like this one)

With the Goblins handled Jordans faction began the clean-up and looting. My contributions had been small and Ellison’s had been nothing so when we both were awarded 100 UBC’s it felt like a win still.

Jordan approached at an eager jog, flashing a grin as he looked over his people’s work.

“So, not too bad huh?” Jordan sniffed looking over his people's work. “Sorry we didn’t give you more work to do, Layton.”

Oh Jordan had already given me plenty of...

Ch 78

The militia was all in place, Jordan at the head as usual. He found true joy in the slaughter. Tom was still unsure how he was supposed to complete his task.

Both Jordan and Tom were over level 25 and had learned about evolved classes. There were several others in the militia who would probably earn the levels in this raid. He knew Nick was also evolved but that wasn’t what concerned him, he knew a surprise sword through the chest would still be more than enough.

Ch 77

I stood waiting with around 200 others. Tranquility remained safely in my storage. In just a few minutes the portal would open and we would face the raid.

As far as Jordan knew, I was just a high level healer. He knew I would be able to cast my dome shield for archers–albeit I had downplayed its usefulness somewhat–and that I had healing skills. Jordan viewed me as strictly a support class.

My fists clenched and unclenched....

Ch 76 (Shifting to Tom BRIEFLY)

(Tom’s perspective)

Tom walked his patrol route, boots crunching against the dirt road. The sound barely registered. His steps were mechanical, moving in rhythm with the others, but his mind was somewhere else. Somewhere fifty-two days ago.

Fifty-two days since the world fell to shit. Tom kept the days etched onto a wall in the basement of the home Jordan had “gifted” him. He counted every single day of this waking nightmare.

He hadn’t always felt this way. Whe...

“Yes I believe I asked if I could drink.” She laughs as she pulls out a bottle from storage. “Not the twelve year old emo boy.”

“Not fair! I am 19, not twelve.”

“That still seems a few chin hairs short of 21 last time I counted.” She shoves him over and flops down next to him kicking her legs up.

We spent the day exploring the town with Cassie.

Sadly, there really wasn’t a whole lot to see. Most of the faction only left their homes when it was absolutely essential. Cassie led us to a group of homes that had essentially been fashioned into a small market.

According to Cassie, this was the part of town Jordan reserved for his favorite crafters. People who worked to provide new items for the militia and in return were given resources to grow and develop their skills and ga...

Cassie stays limp, so I hoist her into a bridal carry and peer into the street, checking if it’s empty. Once I’m sure it’s clear, I sprint home, shove open the door, and slam it shut behind me.

“Well hello again Layton. Whatcha got there? An unconscious woman?”

Looking down at the woman in my arms I slowly turn and face the room.

“Oh yeah. That’s a woman if I ever saw one.” Nick takes his feet down from off the coffee table.

Jordan politely walks us to the front door and after exchanging pleasantries he asks Tom to escort us to a small house that was unoccupied not far from his own. He encourages us to make ourselves at home and that when the raid is approaching he will have Tom get us.

The town is still waking up as we leave Jordan’s place. Grass sprouts in uneven patches along the dirt path, clinging to the spaces where footsteps haven’t beaten it down. The morning dew creates small patches of s...

ch 71

We wound our way through the town, its dirt paths uneven and tangled, as if they had been made without thought. The deeper we went, the worse it got—buildings thrown together from whatever materials were on hand, roofs patched with mismatched wood. It smelled like sweat, damp earth, and old smoke.

The more I saw, the more I appreciated Jared. I had expected—hoped—to find a thriving faction, one ready to take on the induction’s challenges. Instead, I found a settlement slapped to...

We wasted no time.

Our group moved at breakneck speed, cutting through terrain at a pace that shouldn’t have been humanly possible. Ellison kept up better than expected, though he wasn’t on the same level as Nick, Mischief, or me.

I stayed at his side, matching his pace. But neither of us spoke—except when he needed to stop.

Nick and Mischief didn’t wait. That was the plan.

The two of them would scout ahead, get a feel for what we were walking into before we ar...
