GDI Video - Chromebooks Boot Faster Than a Shower - DTNS 4604 Extended

Comments

Well the good news form the story yesterday is apparently you'll be able to get the security updates. "For Chromebooks released before 2021 and already in use, users and IT admins will have the option to extend automatic updates to 10 years from the platform’s release (after they receive their last automatic update). 1" But yeah, I wouldn't let her use it until that happens either.

In fact, my daughter was using it for school and she was quite happy with it over the school provided Dell Windows laptop. Since it is no longer getting security updates, I can't let her use it for that anymore.

So are you happy with the extension then, or does it not matter since you are locked out of any other option anyway?

My issue with Google Chromebook support is end-of-life of good performing hardware. I have a Samsung Chromebook Pro and it is fast and has a beautiful touchscreen, but they ended updates for the device earlier this year because they don't want to support the architecture longer. It's based on an Intel processor, and things like the Chrome Linux support came VERY late to the device. After it was EOL, I tried to put Linux on it to continue its usefulness, and there is a hardware lock on the BIOS that requires tearing the device open to disable. I can't blame Google for this part as this is standard for Samsung type devices. It is annoying what DIYers have to go through to extend the useful life or to repurpose devices.

I like that Tasia, I think she is The Way Forward #LTS
