Hi DTNS crew!
On Tuesday, you discussed the French e-bike rental service Motto and asked if anyone has experience with similar services elsewhere around the world. I do.
In Toronto, Ontario (Canada), we have had an e-bike subscription service available for the last 2-3 years called Zygg. They offer three different types of pedal-assisted e-bikes with different frames and ranges. The most expensive costs $189 CAD/month on a month-to-month plan or $129/month on a 1-year plan. They also offer a seasonal option for periods of 3-6 months at a discounted rate (particularly useful in a winter city like Toronto when riding isn’t as practical for up to 6 months of the year).
Last fall, I signed up for 2 months of service with the bike with the longest range. They delivered the bike directly to my home and all repairs and servicing was included in the price of the subscription. I wanted to commute to work by bike. My commute is 25km. I tried it on a standard bike a couple of times, but it just wasn’t practical for me (too sweaty!). Switching to a pedal-assisted e-bike was the perfect solution for me. I was able to commute regularly to the office (2-3 days a week), arriving in about an hour and relatively sweat free. My route has the benefit of long stretches of separated bike lanes, which makes the experience much safer than riding in traffic.
The reason I went with this option was that I wasn’t yet sure if I wanted to make the full investment in a pedal-assisted e-bike. I had never tried one before and I didn’t know if it would work as a practical commuting option. And, the winter period was also a concern for me. A subscription service was the answer. I got to try out the bike for 2 full months and got lots of experience (1000+ kms of distance!). It also gave me a reasonable amount of exercise while making it feasible for me to have a relatively carbon-free ride to work.
Also, this service is tailored for delivery drivers in Toronto, many of whom use e-bikes (Uber, Doordash, etc…). And for the safety concerns, these bikes are fast, but they aren’t faster than a standard road bike (many of which blew right by me on the way to work each day).
Thanks for all the great pods! Love the show.
