Seniors in Tech: Allison Sheridan

Welcome to Seniors In Tech, a podcast mini-series where we bust stereotypes by talking to seniors who either worked in the tech industry at the beginning of the digital era, and or are currently tech-fluent in their everyday lives. I’m Dr. Niki Ackermans and this week we are talking to Allison Sheridan, who used to work in engineering and is also one of the earliest podcasters!

Excellent, indeed! I too am recently retired from IT and can relate to many of things Allison brought up. Like Allison, I learned Fortran in college and taught myself Basic and RPG (look it up kids), before I got involved with operations and other parts of the industry I was in. I set a goal of learning Python in retirement but so far have not found a way to learn that works for me. I would love to find a course where a "co-learner" like Allison would ask the questions I'm asking or get the presenter to try to explain something in another way. I too look forward to future episodes!

Excellent! We need to realize that the folk that BUILT our technologic wonders are now seniors. My grandmother was from an age where her father told her not to ever learn to type because she would only be fit for secretarial work. She went on to nearly getting at least two PhDs (never did her dissertation for either - but didn't feel like she needed to). She was the epitome of "so easy your grandmother could do it" if it wasn't spelled out on the screen, there was no way she would ever find a feature. Dragon Dictate was a godsend for her because she never did learn to type. I look forward to future episodes.
