Please share YOUR fav musical performances from the movies! We want to know!

DRAFT: Music Performances in The Movies w/ Branson & Tim

I’m a few months late on this and I can’t imagine anyone will read it but I just wanna throw in two things: 1) the “No Dames” song-and-dance number from Hail, Caesar, a classic of the “doing a riff on a thing that just becomes a great example of the thing itself” genre 2) the opera scene from The Fifth Element, a movie that entered my brain at the exact right age to become part of my cerebral firmament

Michael Levy

It’s an iron law, Allen

Very hard for me to pick ten without pulling non-diegetic songs from musicals (a principle I wholeheartedly agree with) but, in no particular order: 1) "Don't Forget Your Old Shipmates", Master & Commander. Really I could pick any performance from that film, but if you put a bunch of old timey guys in wigs having a drunken sing-a-long I'm never going to not enjoy it 2) "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" from Night of the Hunter has already been mentioned above; I will mention it again 3) "Jim Jones to Botany Bay", The Hateful Eight. I liked this film a lot more than most people seemed to and Leigh does such a wonderfully spiteful performance of this song 4) "Home is behind...", Lord of the Rings. Maybe basic but I love it! 5) "Bread and Roses", Pride. Just an achingly beautiful song in a perfect moment, summing up in all its poignant tragedy how little the workers need, and how much they are denied. 6) "If I Had Words", Babe. I'm a sucker for emotionally stunted old men having a small outburst of joy, I guess! 7) "Caravan" (final performance), Whiplash. Sounds great, looks great, what an ending. 8) "Tomorrow Belongs to Me", Cabaret. Maybe not the best song in the film but I found the scene beautifully chilling. 9) "All That Jazz", Chicago. and I could do a tenth but it's late and I'm tired so that's all she wrote!

in no particular order when a cowboy trades his spurs for wings by tim blake nelson from the ballad of buster scruggs there he is again by the hues corporation from blacula the rhythm of life by sammy davis jr from sweet charity the final performance of caravan from whiplash l to the og by jeremy strong from succession season 2 these eyes by michael cera from superbad i know it has to be just a needle drop that they animated some playing for but little drop of poison by tom waits from shrek 2 was the first time i heard tom waits the best of times as performed by the jackass boys from jackass 2 that thing you do by the oneders from that thing you do and my joking but serious pick is you've lost that loving feeling from top gun

Jules B.

John Lee Hooker playing at the Maxwell Street fair with Muddy Waters' band was pretty good too

hurf

Night of the Hunter is a great pick. Should've made my honorable mentions. In my defense I forgot.

Trying to limit myself by the same parameters set in the discussion 1. ”Tiny Dancer” by cast - Almost Famous (2000) 2. ”Falling Slowly” by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová - Once (2007) 3. ”Take Me Back” by Jennifer Jason Leigh - Georgia (1995) 4. ”Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” by Robert Mitchum and Lillian Gish - The Night of the Hunter (1955) 5. ”Wise Up” by Aimee Mann, cast - Magnolia (1999) 6. ”In Dreams” by Roy Orbison, lip synced by Dean Stockwell - Blue Velvet (1986) 7. ”Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” by Marilyn Monroe - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) 8. ”Moon River” by Audrey Hepburn - Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) 9. ”Ballad of a Thin Man” by Stephen Malkmus and The Million Dollar Bashers, dubbing for Cate Blanchett - I’m Not There (2007) 10. ”Somebody to Love” by Jefferson Airplane, karaoke by Jim Carrey - The Cable Guy (1996)

Gordon

It's definitely "the one" from Blues Brothers. One of my all time favorite performers. Love that guy so much.

Branson Reese

I kept expecting both Tim and Brandon to bring up Cab Calloway singing Minnie the Moocher from this. Plenty of great choices from it, but that one feels like the one.

Kenny McElhaney

They rule. Skimbleshanks is a beautiful pull. I stand humbled before it.

Branson Reese

I thought Tim was for sure going to pull from Little Shop! And Black Sheep is great but in my mind the editing and directing was the star there more than the performance itself. Maybe a bullshit reason but you know how it is. Ten is brutal. You gotta make some nasty cuts

Branson Reese

Biz Markie beat box alien is a great pull. Exactly the kind of outside the box thinking we applaud here.

3. Mean Green Mother From Outer Space from Lil Shop of Horrors. Cause ya know- funky puppet monsters. 2. Drive It Like You Stole It is the better song but The Riddle of the Model from Sing Street- that's the whole movie right there boyo's 1. Black Sheep as sung by Brie Larson and the Clash at Demonhead in Scottie Pee vs. The World. Mesmerising. Just a masterclass of using quick simple cuts to define the relationships of four people. You know exactly why they're beating the shit out of each other thirty seconds later. Honorable mention to the Montage sequence in Swiss Army Man- doesn't really count but Danny Rads kicks it off with his little "pop pop corn" before turning into song/score. Sometimes you don't realise your brain's been nuked until far too late.

Matt Butler

The Blue Wrath by I Monster in Shaun of the Dead (cinematic parallels! it’s fun!) Tom Cruise in Rock of Ages obviously pretty much any song from velvet goldmine but especially the one with ewan mcgregor swinging meat respect the repo man shout out does the biz markie beat boxing bit from MIB 2 count Mm-bop prom scene in Detention BEEF IN PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, beef so nice you gotta mention him twice Anthony head night surgeon scene in repo the genetic opera Not sure if I actually understood the rules but wanted to participate

Riley Primus

I would never stand between a man and his hatred of John Landis.

GNIE

Weird-ass game recognize weird-ass game

TheAnntagonist

I was not as hot on it! Didn't dislike it or anything but I was really hoping to like it more. Ah well, can't win em all.

Branson Reese

No excuse for that other than I probably let my hatred for John Landis as a man to take the wheel. But when you're right you're right. Blues Brothers is a great picture. I fucked up. I don't think Tim's seen it so this was my baton to drop and I dropped it.

Branson Reese

I've thought of like twenty things since we did this -chiefly Leningrad Cowboys Go America- and it's driving me crazy. I'm so mad. I should never have agreed to this fucking thing.

Branson Reese

Buckaroo Banzai should've been on mine. I will train up in the off season and come back next year stronger and wiser.

Branson Reese

The Lone Rangers - Degenerated (Airheads) Spinal Tap - Stonehenge (This Is Spinal Tap) The Band - The Night The Drove Ol Dixie Down (yikes but that undeniable horn section, The Last Waltz) Marty McFly - Johnny B Goode (BTTF) Powerline - I2I (A Goofy Movie) The Soggy Bottom Boys - A Man of Constant Sorrow (O Brother, Where Art Thou?) ETA: The butler singing the 1812 Overture in the car in Ready or Not while the family as audience surrogates try and warn him of the impending attack from the back seat Honorable mention: Buckaroo Banzai and the Hong Kong Cavaliers - interrupted performance at Artie's Artery (bc of who my family is)

TheAnntagonist

Surprised to see no Blues Brothers on this list. My first thought was the scene in the country bar where they have to play guitar in the big cage

GNIE

I should've included Hellzapoppin but I felt like I've been banging that drum too often lately. An insane way to feel in retrospect.

Branson Reese

Really amazing recent one for me is Lovers Rock. Which is basically a movie centered only around this single reggae house party set in early 80’s London. There’s this beautiful moment with this song Silly Games where it morphs from a needle drop people are dancing along to to a song everyone is singing along to together again and again in this small, packed room. It’s just one of the best depictions of the magic of group parties I’ve ever seen in a film. Also anything from Hellzapoppin’ makes me lose my shit. Especially that opening number.

Ryan McCandless

“I know these kids and I know they’re about to make the biggest mistake of their lives, but dammit i know there was nothing else they could do and they fucking killed it too”

batboi94

The skinhead bar performance of “Nazi Punks Fuck Off” from Green Room. That movie understands the DIY Punk scene better than any other modern “punk” film. I feel like I know real life versions of every member of that band. Sure, it’s kind of a hack choice of a song to play for literal nazis, but I also know that there’s no other song they could have played. It’s the perfect moment of blunt, knee jerk rebellion with no foresight. That’s just punk. Plus it’s a just great performance.

batboi94

Bye Bye Life from All That Jazz. Skimbleshanks from Cats. Le Jazz Hot from Victor Victoria. Shake Your Tail Feather from Blue Brothers. Eddie from Rocky Horror. I fucking love musicals.
