June 2020 Monthly Update
Added 2020-06-05 22:27:36 +0000 UTCHi.
Heck of a week huh? I thought this month I'd tell you a little about how Monday's show came about.
Last weekend I read about the plans for a Tuesday “Blackout” by the music industry and got to thinking. We could take DTNS off in a show of solidarity. But we weren’t music and other podcasters might not and what message would that send anyway? How would it help?
Then I thought about the conversations I had just listened to on SMR Podcast and SnobOS podcast. Those two shows had opened my eyes to experiences I was unaware of. And that weekend they had both expanded on that, furthering my understanding.
So then I had the idea of taking down the show and replacing it with excerpts front he two shows.
I got in touch with the folks at both shows and asked permission. I told them I felt it was my duty to listen and my role to amplify. They both agreed to let us use their excerpts. Which was frankly risky for them in some ways since it’s one thing to talk to your own audience in context, it’s another thing to be blasted to an entirely different one.
I also ran the idea by Roger and Sarah. Roger reminded me that we had Chris Ashley from SMR Podcast already booked for Tuesday so we quickly decided to switch to doing this on Monday, since there wasn’t a guest and it would feel wrong somehow to reschedule Chris.
Then I decided to reach out to some of the other black contributors to DTNS and ask them if they wanted to record a message for the show. I explained my reasoning for this again. Ant and Lamarr both were willing. This was an even bigger ask. It’s one thing to excerpt, it’s another thing to ask them to record their feelings, especially right now.
But they both got back to me. I listened to both submissions with tears in my eyes. Roger, Sarah and I made the final call and I planned to get up Monday and edit.
Ha ha. Yeah. Some of you may have seen my tweet about underestimating how long it takes to edit. It always takes longer than I think. I should know this by now.
I decided to start with Ant’s incredibly moving recording because it starts so strong. You can almost hear everything you need to hear in that sigh. I then chose SMR’s excerpt next because it had the most explanation of the roots of these events with honest relating of some of the ways their life is affected that seemed to tie in nicely to Ant’s examples.
That led perfectly into Terrance and Nica’s conversation about Breanna Taylor and the nature of privilege which I thought they summed up nicely. It’s not what you think people mean when they say it and they helped explain that so well. Then I put Lamarr as our closer because he had such a genuine honest approach and I think is the most familiar to our audience. I also loved how he ended his recording. It felt like the proper ending to the piece.
I record my intro which I had been writing in my head all week. I ran that by Sarah and Roger before I recorded it and got their sign off. Then I put the whole thing together (hours) and sent them the rough cut. After a couple of smart adjustments, we had a final file. I posted it to Patreon and asked Roger to post it to Acast.
We held our breath for the response.
And it was beyond what I would have hoped. Many of you liked the idea on the face. And that’s excellent. But some of you admitted you didn’t like the idea but you listened anyway because I asked. And you got it. And that’s what this is all about. I wanted people you know and trust to talk tech to tell you what their life is like. So you wouldn’t feel preached at. You’d feel it was your friends. And I wanted to cash in some of those chips I had built up from my own privilege (see Terrance explanation in show) to help and get people to listen who wouldn’t have heard these stories otherwise.
Thank you.
Thank you for trusting me.
Thank you for listening.
I have no words.
Stay safe out there.
