Nvidia Shield TV - Live With It

Roger's been living with the Nvidia Shield TV as his regular TV streaming device as well as playing games on it. He breaks down what it's for, what he likes about it and what he doesn't on the latest Live With It!

Get Roger's detailed notes on the Nvidia Shield.

Roger's Recommendations

Get if you want the highest performance set-top box for your Home entertainment setup. 4K HDR support, Dolby surround sound including ATMOS support.

Great if you want to run Plex, Plex Server or Kodi.

You want Google Assistant to help search for content

Great for retro-gaming. If you plan on subscribing to GeForce Now the Shield is a great way to play it.

Don't get if you just want simple Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime streaming.

Don't get if you want to play AAA games on game console. Xbox One, PS4 much better for those plus they also have streaming apps available on their systems as well

Roger missed/forgot/didn't-know-about one huge detail about the Shield Pro(2019). It has an amazing AI 4K upscaler. Nvidia trains the AI by feeding tons of 1080p content with what it looks like in 4K. The AI learns what it takes to upscale it to 4K and passes that algorithm to the users. It is nothing but amazing. I queued up Avatar and paused a scene in the beginning where the space ship is coming up on Pandora. The detail added into the solar panels was incredible. You could also see way more detail on Pandora itself. Nvidia has an option on by default to let you hold in the top right button the remote to enable a split screen view where the left side is without the upscaler and the right one with it on. Then you can use the direction button to move that divider left/right. I really don't think I'm exaggerating at how amazing this is. The upscaler works on everything from Plex to YouTube to Netflix. As long as it's not 4K content, it'll upscale it. Roger, I hope you're able to try this out sometime and give us an update.

I love my ShieldTVs (2015 16GB and Pro version), I wanted a box as good and flexable as the Boxee Boxes I replaced. I've side-loaded a couple apps that don't have native versions (Patreon, Chrome, GMail, Facebook Messager and a couple more) and the box is great for vintage game emulators. I've had some success with side-loading Google Hangouts and Skype, but with no native support it may do some werid things. Unfortunately the later ShieldTV revisions seem like a downgrade for me.
