Updates on Video

So as we move onward and upward toward video (trust me, it may not look like it but we are) we're strating to clean up the sort of unorganized way in which we handled DTNS video up until now.

Here are some of the things we're changing.

1.) The downloadable video on Archive.org will now be JUST the show. That's what' feeds Shawn's unofficial video podcast as well.

So negative there is you won't get the post-show in the video feed anymore. At this point I need to remind you that this has always been an unofficial feed. The intention when we make it official is to have it be just the show proper. So this is a step toward that.

2.) The DTNS YouTube account (youtube.com/dailytechnewsshow) will start to have the show-only videos regularly. We sort of haphazardly use this account when Tom's out and when we remember to reupload video to it. The idea is, again, when we hit 20K to make that the official home of the post-show show-only video, all the time.

3.) Post-show video will still be on the YouTube videos at youtube.com/acedtect. Post-show video can also be seen live of course when we do the show at 4:30 PM Eastern M-F. Can be heard live on AlphaGeekRadio at that same time. And can be listened to after the fact in the FULL MP3 that is in the treasure ches if you back at the $5 or more a month level (which is all of you).

4.) There are plans. We do plan to make the post-show video available in an alternate way. But we don't have that way yet so hang tight.

And by the way I know this is taking something away (full downloadable video of post-show), even though it's not taking anything away we we ever promised. So if this seems diabolical to folks we're not against reconsidering. It's just easier for us to get into these habits early than to roll everything out at once. And we don't have the resources YET for the full video deal.

That is all.

My daily ritual is to watch the youtube.com/acedtect feed as soon as I get home from work. I watch it on my 65" plasma through my TiVo. I typically watch the headlines and then fast forward to the post show. My pet peeve about the video feed is "the set". It looks like you are in your grandmother's basement and it reminds me of your TNT days. I don't care about you doing anything fancy just something that reflects a progressive tech show. As a former lighting director, just keep the lighting good. BB, DK, and JRY do it right as far as set design, lighting, and basic production value. I know the video feed is "unofficial" as far as DTNS is concerned, but the same is not true with your other shows. So, my request would be some adjustment in the general look. BTW, this is my first day as a co-executive producer...at 50 years old, probably one of your more "senior" producers...been a fan since the BOL days and my three kids have been raised on a daily dose of you, CNET, and what is left of the good parts of TWiT... Keep up the good work Tom!

Great to see pre- and post- in video - the only reason I watch them. Consider producing official video but keeping raw feed posted to "unofficial" channel?

Thanks for taking the time to listen to the people Tom, even before your were community funded I always felt you did your part to at least try and listen to the audience whenever you could. Echoing what others have already said, I really enjoy the post-show. If it were to get clipped from the video version, I personally would just flip to the audio feed myself. I have no need for the video during my morning commute and if I don't get to enjoy the after-show hijinks, I'll just skip video altogether. :)

I have to say that I am really bummed about this. The post show is one of the parts that I like the most, it's a nice behind the scenes look at the show and guests. Plus I learned "credit" from Jennie ;) I mean I wont stop listening and supporting, I have watched since the BOL days, it just bummed me out hearing about this.

Brian Ferris

Hmmm. Enough of you have expressed regret at the video FEED not having the 'after show' that I'll talk with Roger and Jennie about that.

Daily Tech News Show

Certainly doesn't seem diabolical, although I do like knowing if Len is exiting early because it's spaghetti night, or if he just needs to mow the lawn. :) I guess I prefer it all in 1 file, but as long as I can watch/listen to the post-show banter somehow, I'm plenty happy. And losing the post-show wouldn't kill me either, but I do enjoy it. I'd love to watch live, but I gots to pay the bills. Whatever you all decide, I am a thoroughly happy patron.

As long as the post show will be available on YouTube in some form, I'll be happy :D

If I understand your #3 it doesn't sound like you are taking anything away, just letting us know where to find it. That is, the post show video will now be at youtube.com/acedtect . So it's still available. Or am I misunderstanding? In any case, I would say the post show video has often been a huge source of value for me. And the pre-show stuff in the treasure chest audio as well. Thanks.

As someone who only listens to DTNS (makes my commute way better) I've always been apprehensive of the official video feed goal (hosts and guests tend to rely on the video, leaving audio only listeners in the dark). I would rather see more effort put into the in depth topical programs similar to the Net Neutrality special. Thank you all for all your hard work.

I have to admit that this bums me out. I really enjoy the post show content. But you're right. You never promised anything when it comes to video. It is unofficial after all. I'll still support you with the same amount I did before this announcement. I look forward to hearing it again. I just have to figure out how I'm going to do it.

I 2nd and 3rd the thoughts from Mike and Dylan below. Getting to see the post show stuff (and any making-of aspects) is really great. As Co-EP's, hanging out on set and in the edit room is the one thing that makes us Suits feel like we are hip Creatives... because the rest of the day we are too busy upstairs, sucking up to the guys with nicer suits. But it sounds like we can continue do that via YouTube, and that's easier for you, so that's cool. Anything that's easier for *you* allows us to pad the budget and buy you more sandwiches. Keep up the great work, we're all rooting for you and your team.
