Wow I’m learning so much, but surely the calendar on the plane wouldn’t have caused it to crash

Y2K was an actual problem, the bit about them working for months to update the code to base 4 instead of base 2 was real. People in IT and tech worked all nighters for months to fix everything

I’m turning to dust as I describe this, but the computers-can’t-handle-these-numbers thing also meant that people were afraid all kinds of things would fail: power, banks, transportation, food supply. There are plenty of survivalists now; then, at least where I lived, it was very common and casually accepted to have a stockpile of canned goods and supplies just in case everything came crashing down when 2000 dawned. The US watched the world not end when midnight struck on the other side of the globe, and began to breathe easier.

Do you remember when you were 12 and people thought it was over because of the Mayan calendar? Similar type of thing, unwarranted concern for over active minds. For y2k tho people were worried the power grids would fail and planes would fall out of the sky because the computers that ran everything would simultaneously malfunction having 99 roll over to 0 Anyways sorry for the long winded reply LOL

LonnieK

I heard it had something to do with how old computer calendars didn't go up to 2000 and instead just reset to 0, so a bunch of people just went crazy thinking that meant everything was ending.
