Also came out almost two years to the date of the arson attack. July 18, 2019 was the attack and this came out July 19, 2021. It feels very intentional and I’m glad you brought it up! As someone who loves Kyoto Animation’s works, the incident was devastating and this incredible one-shot/movie reminds me of it and how those artists won’t be forgotten

It is almost certain that the axe incident in the story is inspired by the 2019 Kyoto Animation arson attack.
Kyoto Animation studio is a studio that many quote as an example for the industry with the way it treats its staff and the quality of their work. It is credited for many anime classics. From the ones you've seen 'A Silent Voice' and 'Violet Evergarden'.
The arsonist set fire to the animation studio with gasoline, accusing the studio of plagiarism which was later proven to be completely unfounded. As a tragic outcome 36 people died and 34 were injured. It is considered one of the deadliest massacres in Japan after WWII.
It was an event that sent shockwaves throughout Japan and especially anyone interested in the mediums of anime and manga.
It is so sad going through the credits of works such as 'A Silent Voice' and realising that many of them died in the arson.
