Hey everyone!
So, I was scrolling through TikTok the other day and came across this video of two lovebirds. One was dancing its heart out to the Backstreet Boys' "Everybody", all bright green and yellow. The other, a chill mix of blue and white, just stood there, not bothered at all. It got me thinking: why not turn this fun bird scene into a drawing of two teens?
Here's what I learned from this:
1. Using Color to Show Personality
How to give characters their own vibe using color?
Colors aren't just about aesthetics; they convey emotions, energy, and even stories. To truly capture a character's essence, think of their personality traits and the feelings you want to evoke in the viewer. Dive deep into the character's backstory, their likes, dislikes, and their emotional state in the scene. Then, assign them colors that resonate with these attributes. Remember, contrasting colors can highlight differences, while analogous colors might indicate similarity or harmony.
Look at our lively girl character. Her green shoes and yellow top aren't just random choices. They symbolize her vibrant, energetic, and playful nature, reminiscent of the dancing green bird's demeanor. Contrast this with the boy. His blue shorts and white shirt mirror his more laid back, reserved, and calm disposition, perfectly echoing the blue bird's vibe in the scene.
2. Body Language Speaks Louder than Words
How to show what characters are feeling without them saying anything?
It's all about the nuances. To capture authentic emotion, pay attention to real-life interactions. The little things, how people shift their weight, where they look, the tiny gestures they make, tell a story. To improve your illustrations, spend some time people watching. Take notes or sketches of interesting body language you observe. Use these references to add depth and emotion to your characters.
Take the girl in our illustration, for instance. Her dance move, specifically the way she leans in to touch the boy's arm with her head, speaks volumes. It suggests she's being playful, teasing, and a tad mischievous. The boy, however, conveys a different emotion. His gaze directed away, combined with a hand hidden in his pocket, gives him an air of shyness or slight embarrassment. These body language cues give our characters depth and personality, all without a single word.
3. Perspective Makes Characters Pop
Want your characters to jump off the page and grab attention?
Introduce a one-point perspective technique to your character designs. By doing so, you can give your characters depth, make them appear more three-dimensional, and inject a sense of movement. This doesn't mean warping your characters but subtly adjusting certain elements to guide the viewer's eyes.
In our illustration, both the girl and the boy have been tweaked with perspective in mind. Specifically, look at their legs. One leg appears slightly smaller than the other on both characters. This isn't a random design choice but a deliberate application of one-point perspective. By making one leg a tad smaller and positioned slightly behind, we are tricking the eye into seeing depth where there isn't any. This illusion of depth gives the characters a more dynamic, lively, and three-dimensional appearance. Next time you sketch, try placing one leg (or arm) slightly behind the other and scale it down just a touch. It's a subtle change, but you'll immediately notice how it makes your characters pop and feel more alive.
Conclusion
The world around us is full of little stories and scenes that can breathe life into our art. Whether it's a pair of lovebirds dancing to a '90s jam or the subtle interplay between two teens, there's a universe of inspiration waiting to be explored. In our art journey, it's essential to remember that the magic often lies in the details, the colors we choose, the body language we depict, and the perspective we employ. These elements, when pieced together thoughtfully, not only enrich our artwork but also make it relatable and evocative. So, always stay curious, keep observing, and let those everyday moments guide your creative spirit. Because, in the end, art is all about connecting, expressing, and celebrating the world we see and feel.
