Matrix is dead. Long live Mattermost!

In an effort to move our Patreon community away from Discord (for a plethora of reasons), I'd created a Matrix server over at https://matrix.notthebe.ee/. However, after a month of using it, I and other community members decided to try out another open-source community platform – Mattermost.

Why?

Matrix is an amazing software product with one big flaw – all clients suck, each in its unique way.

There are dozens of Matrix clients, each one with their own advantages and disadvantages, and neither client is good at everything. Case in pointElement is cross-platform, but has a subjectively confusing interface and doesn't support custom emojis. Cinny, however, does support custom emojis, but only comes as a web app and doesn't support voice calls. And then there are multiple other clients, which also do some stuff well, and completely fall flat when it comes to other stuff – SchildiChat, FluffyChat, and so on.

At the end of the day, it basically means that you have to run at least two client apps in order to get the full feature set.

Why Mattermost?

Mattermost is an open-source alternative to Slack. It's definitely more enterprise/business-focused, but also has multiple advantages over Matrix/Element.

Most importantly – it has one cross-platform client that doesn't suck, and supports both custom emojis and voice calls.

Current known limitations:

  • Only one person can screen share at the same time in the voice chat
  • Obviously not Matrix, so doesn't have federation with other Matrix servers

If you want to try it out, here's the invite link:

I need your help!

Hi everyone!

I'm working on a video which involves benchmarking an Intel iGPU. One of the things I want to test is hardware video transcoding.

Unfortunately, there isn't really a 'golden standard' benchmark for hardware video transcoding with QuickSync, so it's hard to compare my results with other CPUs.

So if you have an machine with an non-F series Intel processor running Windows or Linux, and want to contribute to the next video, please do the following:

1. Download Handbrake 1.6.1: https://handbrake.fr/downloads.php

2. Download this test file: https://www.larmoire.info/jellyfish/media/jellyfish-140-mbps-4k-uhd-h264.mkv

3. Load the file into Handbrake, choose "Official > Hardware > H.265 QSV 2160p 4K

4. Click "Start" to transcode the video, taking note the average FPS displayed during the process and the time needed to transcode after the process is done (see the screenshots)

Feel free to comment with the results under this post, or send them to me in a DM! ❤️
