Spot on about the environment shaping the fighting force and home field advantage. Salusa Secundus is the planet the Sardaukar come from. It's a prison planet that has all the f'd up things with a prison on a planetary scale but also the environment is Arrakis level brutal. The strongest people who can survive the trials of Salusa Secundus become Sardaukar. It's the most ruthless force in the universe and the other houses have no answer against them. However, the Fremen are a tier above the Sardaukar because their fanaticism and fighting spirit comes from the heart and familial tradition. The fanaticism of belief is far more formidable than fanaticism through brutality and The Fremen make quick work of the Sardaukar in large part because of that. The Sardaukar have no other motivation beyond the brutality their masters put them through. They're essentially a slave army. The Fremen believe in a Messiah figure and will give up their lives for Paul. The Sardaukar crumbled easily because the thing they feared crumbled easily under Paul's weight. Take away the threat of the boot on the neck, the Sardaukar become irrelevant.

2024-04-22 11:28:46 +0000 UTCMinor lore stuff: The Fremen are known as the best fighters in the universe, mostly because of their environment and centuries long war made them become that out of necessity. The Emperor's elites are 2nd best but will always lose on Fremen home turf. Home Turf and superior experience is why they were able to be so dang good. The Harkonnen planet has a "Black Sun" which causes the outside environment to only be in black and white. It is why there is color inside the building but B&W outside and during the arena fight. It's also why the fireworks were just black pops in the white sky. And why the Harkonnen are so bleach white naturally.

2024-04-21 10:50:01 +0000 UTCIt does my heart good to see new people being interested in this universe. I agree with you sometimes the series gets really out there but it takes chances and that's what matters. There's nothing safe in the Dune books. For a book published in 1965, it was WAY ahead of its time. Paul Atreides ranks very high for me for main characters. There's many times I hate him, despise him, and think he's trash when reading the books. Yet those aspects I hate about him are 100% a product of the system. He's an extremely challenging character to feel any attachment to past the original Dune book yet for some reason I do. Herbert's writing was god damn brilliant for making me feel such a way. The way Dennis Villanueva was able to weave in threads from "Dune Messiah" in Dune Part 2 was extremely well crafted and masterful.

2024-04-21 04:57:47 +0000 UTCYeah, the first three or four books seem to be the most solid story wise I think. I hear book four gets too philosophical so it might not make for a good read. But i find the concepts it introduces to be quite fascinating nonetheless

2024-04-21 03:46:02 +0000 UTCThe Dune universe gets REALLY weird after a certain point. Sometimes reading the novels left me with the impression "man... Frank Herbert was on some spice the day he wrote this".

2024-04-21 03:31:27 +0000 UTCThere's a "Dune: The Prophecy" tv series in the works and it's reportedly takes place after the Butlerian Jihad covering the rise of the Bene Gesserit. Totally understandable why DV didn't get into the spacing guild, no ai, etc in the two films. The world he presented is already a lot for new viewers and adding some of the weirder elements may have been too much. I'm hyped to see how the series explores and fleshes out the massive Dune universe.

2024-04-21 00:28:47 +0000 UTCYeah happened to me too. After it hit hour 2 of the movie it stops but that likes 40 minutes of it being out of sync from when it started. Hopeful they fix it soon.

2024-04-21 00:17:27 +0000 UTCI'm kinda shocked at this reaction when Mickey even noted he had read the book. Felt like y'all were trying to watch a comedy and miss all the subtext.

2024-04-21 00:15:02 +0000 UTCAfter this movie i read a synopsis of all six Dune books. The story gets quite philosophical and intense! It’s about the human species and how precognitive individuals, like Paul, have to make difficult choices to preserve the species. a powerful series and I praise Frank Herbert for unearthing this masterpiece.

2024-04-20 23:07:23 +0000 UTCIt isn't worm piss, it is the bile of a newborn worm. After they drown it they take the concentrated spice mélange that is in their bile, that is the "Water of Life" that is deadly to all but the Bene Gesserit basically. The worms are the spice, they make it and excrete it. The Bene Gesserit are working their own angle to supplant the Emperor. He isn't working with them and he is aware that even his daughter can not really be trusted since she is also BG but she actually still cares for her father even if he is a tool. The nukes were not to destroy Arrakeen, the Harkonen, and the Emperor, they were to destroy the stone formations and cliffs that protect the city from large storms and to let the Sandworms+Fremen forces in to take the city. It is one of the few things that other adaptions have done a better job of explaining. Later Paul also lets them know he has planted nukes on all of the Spice fields and that he will destroy them unless all of the houses of the Landsraad capitulate to his demands. 'They who can destroy a thing, control a thing". Spice means no spacing guild to expedite travel with their spice evolved navigators, no powers for the bene gesserit, and none of the life extending properties for aristocratic families of the Landsradd. Basically and apocalypse for the known universe. I think even the Mentats like Thufir are reliant on the spice to help speed their brains so they can do all those calculations. They never even touch on the Ixians who are like a fringe power that is still trying to develop technology. All tech is looked own on after their old AI servants rose up to fight against them in a war called "The Butlerian Jihad". There is not enough movie to cover all of that for sure, still think this adaptation is as good as it could be under the limitations of a film. A multi-season show would be amazing if they could somehow have this production value but I think it would bankrupt even teh largest studios.

2024-04-20 23:00:47 +0000 UTCThe Harkonnen home world of Giedi Prime orbits a black sun which makes everything look black and white. There's a really cool transition between the inside artificial light, which allows the eyes to see color, to the black and white outside. The lack of color makes Geidi Prime look like it has no hope and no individualism. Even fireworks, which are supposed to give people joy, looks like an oily oppressive thing. The Harkonnen society evolved with that black sun to have a black and white mentality which explains why many of them, if not all, are psychotic.
