2023-10-04 03:22:06 +0000 UTCThe term martial art comes from fighting techniques used in times of war which Karate is specifically from and originated from, sure now a lot of karate practitioners practice the rule that it is for self defence only which is great cause no kids are really at war but it did originate from this strike first strike hard no mercy mentality. So learning that aspect of it is not really a bad thing. Its just about how people use it and balance their lives.

2023-10-03 14:46:50 +0000 UTCThe where are you from? question is interesting, I get asked that question for a different reason I'm white but I spent my childhood in india so I have an accent, it use to be much stronger but it has faded, I still get asked where I'm from, which I say "I grew up in india thats why I've got a bit of an accent". I use to say I'd just record that line and play it for people because anytime I meet someone new/start a new job etc, that question will inevitably come up, as kid when I moved back it would annoy me but now its just funny for me knowing the question is coming and all the different ways people try and ask while also trying to avoid being offensive. I know its not the same thing but just how you guys described the ways people are round about asking where your from reminded me of that.

There’s a reason muay thai is the primary striking component of modern mma. There’s a certain point where the philosophy isn’t compatible with practicality. There’s a balance and merit to both viewpoints which the show is gonna explore. And johnny isn’t really saying strike first as in you start fights. It’s meant to be framed as if you need to strike, *then* strike first. The no mercy part is the actual thematic throughline of the season.
