2023-05-09 07:16:27 +0000 UTCThe story with the Buffy movie is that Joss Whedon wrote the script and came up with the idea but the studio and director made a bunch of changes that Joss didn’t like and they took it in a far campier tone. It’s still really fun if you don’t take it too seriously and it and provides a “sort of backstory” for the character before moving to Sunnydale. Joss’s original script (which he later made a comic book out of) is the official canon origin story and the movie while not canon necessarily still has a lot of the same story beats.

I could see that being the only choice back in the day, when the other only option was the... debatale Fate adaptation. But now we have access to (almost) all of the material from the Stay/Night visual novel. Which is THE ORIGINAL PRODUCT. It was written first, with the idea of being experienced first. Does Stay/Night spoil Zero? Yes, but that's how it was meant to be as a PREQUEL! That's just how it works with that type of product. It's the whole point of prequels. Giving you the chance to experience the events leading to the starting point you're already familiar with. Once again, think Star Wars. Starting with Zero could also lead the viewer to get a wrong expectation of what Fate as a whole truly is. And that's to be expected, since it was literally written by a different author. Sure, Urobuchi did discuss pretty much everything with Nasu himself, but his style just oozes out of Zero. If you've ever happened to read FSN visual novel and F/Z novels, you can immediately tell that they're the work of two different authors. So why shouldn't a new viewer start with what was actually written first? I'm completely fine with people being hyped over Zero. Damn, I'm too! I love that story. BUT this will never change the fact that it was quite literally written for people that had already experienced the original product in Fate/Stay Night. It's literally that simple. But I do agree that people would fight over the starting point regardless of anything. Even tho, we're probably never even going to get to the point of having to choose in the first place, sadly. Personally, I'm just a big advocate of consuming media in the order THE AUTHOR HIMSELF intended. That's all.

2023-05-08 06:35:25 +0000 UTCYou anecdotally have never heard "huzzah" in real life, I anecdotally have heard it several times in real life, but my point was, like "banzai", it's not something that represents typical speech. I pointed that out because you used it as an example when saying moments of screaming in the dub is something "no one in English would ever actually do", whereas Japanese people say "banzai" or greet you at restaurants. Having set phrases that service industry people say excitedly is common in Japan and in the U.S. It's not analogous to every day speech in either country, since, in both countries, people just emote in normal ways. You seem to have misunderstood me when I said "You may think the Japanese way is more exaggerated..." NOT "You think Japanese is way more exaggerated..." In other words, while the Japanese way may be more exaggerated than the English way (artistically speaking), silly Japanese voice acting is no closer to their actual way of speaking than silly American voice acting is to Americans. As Chaos T above noted, I specified Shōnen for this very reason. The way characters in your average dramatic anime for adults speak is much closer to how actual people in Japan AND the States speak. And just like Japan, the States have cartoons in which people sound closer to actual people, and ones which are exaggerated to the point you can easily say "no one talks like that".

I'm more than aware that the average japanese doesn't yell banzai and made zero allusion to that in my original comment. I said japanese va in anime is *closer* to daily japanese than english anime dub is to daily english. I said closer, I didn't even say "close". And I didn't say "Japanese is way more exaggerated" at all, in fact I said, despite japanese being exaggerated in their va, it still fits japanese animation better than english dubs fit in those same animes for reasons beyond exaggerated va, cinematic history, intentional cultivated style, and more yell-y hospitality in some cases. And "huzzah" isn't comparable to my examples anyways, for one, I've literally never heard that in my life outside of specific films in specific time periods in very specific contexts. I've literally heard "IRASSHAIMASE" multiple times when walking into japanese restaurants. And you repeating my pixar point without actually addressing that...it bolsters my point is weird too. The point is that obviously pixar features heightened voice acting but the difference between pixar and daily english speaking isn't as drastic as english dub vs daily english speaking. There's a reason japanese cinema still adopted more yelling in general before english cinemas and animations did.

("Bonsai" is the mini tree, "Banzai" is the expression. 👍🏼) Pixar films are an exaggeration of how we talk, just the same. You may think the Japanese way is more exaggerated, but the truth is Japanese people speak just as normally as we do, and no normal person in the west or the east speaks like a cartoon character. "Ore wa *deep breath * KOROSEEEEEEEEEEEI!!!" sounds just as ludicrous to the Japanese as "I will *deep breath * KILL YOOOOOOOOOOU!!!" sounds to Americans.

It's actually quite simple! It's just that people like to capitalize on easy memes, so there's that. I also want to stress a crucial point: do NOT start with Fate/Zero! Really, don't! And I'm saying this as someone who (sadly) started with exactly that one. It is meant as a PREQUEL, and written in a specific way for people already aware of the various plot twists. Imagine watching Star Wars' prequel trilogy before the main one. That would take away A LOT. So lemme just give you the order intended by the author. -Fate Unlimited Blade Works (Season 1) -Fate Unlimited Blade Works (Season 2) -Fate Heaven's Feel Presage Flower (Movie 1) -Fate Heaven's Feel Lost Butterfly (Movie 2) -Fate Heaven's Feel Spring Song (Movie 3) -Fate/Zero (Season 1) -Fate/Zero (Season 2) I know that this is A LOT, but I can assure you it would be worth it! Especially if you're some kind of history/myths nerd just like me, hehe. The writing is also overall extremely solid, and the same goes for the worldbuilding side. The animation is indeed absolutely unreal. I think Ufotable's best product can be found elsewhere, but Fate is still simply gorgeous to look at. Some of my dearest characters/moments come from this franchise. I truly love it a whole lot. I've been hoping for you guys to react to this franchise for years, but I always felt unsure about actually suggesting it because of it having so many parts making up the main storyline. Still, a man can dream and hope!

Even if japanese voice acting for anime is more exaggerated and hammy than how they would speak in real life, it’s still a closer relation vs daily english speaking vs anime english dub. Pixar vs everyday english speaking is the actual comparison on our end. Some situation in these animes in english dub where they would yell and scream just doesn’t translate well because no one in english would ever actually do that. But japanese still has “bonsai!” Or the stuff they yell at you when you enter into a restaurant. Basically regardless of how exaggerated voice acting is in anime in both languages, exaggerated japanese still fits better than exaggerated english because it was created for a japanese medium. If you watch pixar films dubbed in japanese and can understand it, it’s gonna be sillier than english.

I was more so referring to the phenomenon of thinking something is "cool sounding" when you don't understand it. GOOD anime voice-acting is still cheesy and silly a lot of the time; and this is by design. Japanese people who aren't into anime will see a Shōnen character loudly proclaiming how they will defeat their enemies with the power of friendship, and they find it "cringe". Meanwhile, English-speakers will see that same moment dubbed, and think that the "cringe" is due to the English voice-acting, when it's actually due to that moment itself being "cringe" in any language. I use quotations there, because the point is, there's actually nothing wrong with that moment. The manga-ka, the animators, the voice-actors, everyone designed that moment to be over-the-top, and if you're an adult (in ANY country), you may find it hard to accept the cheesiness for what it is...unless you read the translated dialogue while hearing emotion, without having to understand the words verbally. It literally hits different. Not better, just different. The difference being that the cheesiness is masked behind a language barrier. There is, of course, nothing wrong with this. You can prefer the sub or the dub for how it sounds, or any number of other reasons. Again, I'm not really talking about bad acting. There are, of course, many horrendous dubs out there where the actors aren't even trying or just suck at emoting at all. As you two pointed out, this happens in Japanese as well. Generally speaking, however, voice-acting in anime is heightened emotionally to an absurd degree, and most professional dubbing companies understand this, collaborating with the teams in Japan to come up with performances that get as close as possible to the Japanese performances, while colloquialising them for English.

2023-05-07 09:05:16 +0000 UTCSo Fate is one of 2 series where I've looked up "Normies + show name" and was surprised there was no results (Gurren Lagann was the other). I agree with the commenter that it is Ufotable's best work. The animation in the Heaven's Feel movies is especially peak Ufotable goodness. Fate is bit more "adult" than Demon Slayer and can get very dark at times. I really enjoyed BlindWave's reactions to it a few years ago. It isn't Demon Slayer levels of popular, but Fate is pretty massive. It was a visual novel that spun off in to like a million different properties. It's something that if yall threw it on a poll I would say it would easily be one of the favorites to win. Btw Spy Family does have a season 2 and movie announced for later this year. The new season will likely start around October. They are really trying to capitalize on how stupidly popular it is over there.

But also the absolute Rocky Balboa slander… ☹️ I still think you guys missed like half the movie talking over it (and made up a romance plot line that didn’t exist) but oh well. Glad you enjoyed the series, and I had a great time watching them with you. Excited to finish up with Creed III next week. And the next series you need to see is Scream. The quality does vary a little but they’re all entertaining, much like this series you just finished. Not to mention movies where you have to guess the killer make for great reactions.
